5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent music, but poor marketing.
Any Mark Knopfler fan who knows up front what he is getting will not be disappointed by this recording. With the exception of the first track, it is all instrumental and great laid-back music, background or otherwise.

Unhappy reviewers are the result of the promos calling it a soundtrack, when the recording itself is called "Music From..." and no warning...

1.0 out of 5 stars "Deceptive" to call this a Soundtrack
All the best music from the film is glaringly missing. Willy Nelson's work, plus "Good Old Shoe", "Courage Mom", "The American Dream", (We Are The World" spoof), plus "God Bless the Men Of The 303" all moronically left out. 1.0 out of 5 stars The recognizeable songs from the movie are MISSING!, January 8, 2005
This review is from: Wag the Dog (Audio CD)
I bought this so called soundtrack for ONLY one song, Merle Haggard's "Courage Mom". It's not on the CD and neither are Willie Nelson's cuts. Grrrr...there are 24 minutes worth of worthless tracks on this CD. One track with inaudible lyrics and 7 others that sound like elevator music. I would give this ZERO stars, but the default is 1-5. Total rip-off!

2.0 out of 5 stars Missing much - not a soundtrack, February 23, 2003

This review is from: Wag the Dog (Audio CD)
I love the music on this album, but am very upset (like others here) so much of the good and fun music in the movie isn't here. Certainly it wasn't a space consideration. Definitely not a sound track. Definitely a *short* collection of knoffler's work done for the movie. Calling it a soundtrack is most misleading.

These songs in "Wag The Dog" were excellent. "Old Brown Shoe", that patriotic song and that tribute to the brave men of the "303" unit. Are any of these on this soundtrack? NO! And that is criminal at best! Unless you are really into Mark Knopler, stay away from this.

The soundtrack for this hilarious movie has a low-key, down-to-earth soundtrack that sharply contrasts the many sophisticated but wayward characters on screen. These good old-fashioned songs come from the heartland of America, not Washington, D.C. (thank God). Except for the bluesy leadoff title track that has a humorous edge and features the soulful voice of Mark Knopfler, the rest of the CD features warm instrumental songs that contain a folksy, easygoing charm. "Working On It" is the irresistable standout of these eight songs, a gentle acoustic nugget nothing short of gorgeous, heard in the first few moments of the movie. "In the Heartland" typifies some of the down-to-earth acoustic instrumentals, while "An American Hero" lends a patriotic, proud sound to the mix. The last tune, "We're Going to War," is also catchy, a bit more rugged and beefed up than the others. Overall, this soundtrack boasts formidable guitar playing from Dire Straits' lead singer (see Brothers in Arms), with hooks that are subtle yet remain in your head after you absorb them, which, in this case, is a good thing. There's something about this movie and CD that speaks of the absurdity of our culture's McNews appetite and endless fascination with all things hyped up and in-yer-face. But that's just my opinion.

Any Mark Knopfler fan who knows up front what he is getting will not be disappointed by this recording. With the exception of the first track, it is all instrumental and great laid-back music, background or otherwise.

Unhappy reviewers are the result of the promos calling it a soundtrack, when the recording itself is called "Music From..." and no warning that it's only 24 minutes long. The publishers added an after the fact wrapper calling it a 24 minute minidisk at a special price.

The track "Working It Out" is probably the one played most often as background in the movie, and my favorite. The recording becomes as long as you want by putting this song on continuous loop or shuffle playing the entire disc repeatedly, and this music is good enough to be able to do just that.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really Great, October 2, 2000
This review is from: Wag the Dog (Audio CD)
Okay, this is a soundtrack, so in a way we expect a little less. It is a short one too, it only goes for about 24 minutes.

The funny thing is that this is really great. Every track is so good. There is some really pretty and atmospheric guitar playing to be found. I think it is safte to say that this is the best music that Knopfler has made for a very long time.

I'm not such a fan of the song 'Wag the dog', which reallly isn't strong for a Knopfler song, but the reamaining tracks are most appealing.

The decision not to include the other music from the movie was strange, but it hardly detracts from what is here.

1.0 out of 5 stars Where are the songs? Where's the music from the film?, February 7, 2008

This isn't a soundtrack. If you were expecting to hear the great songs, you won't find them. I wanted to hear the great songs from the film and they just aren't here. Too bad, because the rest of the music would have received much better reviews if the most memorable music was featured.
Not worth even a borrow from the library.

Working on It continues to be, along with Theme of Laura, from the soundtrack to Silent Hill 2, one of the most memorable underplayed and evocative pieces of music I've ever heard.

It is true that many songs from the movie are not featured here, but that is intended to be reflected on the price tag, which has been lowered.

For those of you who want the bluesy song "Good Ole Shoe" heard in the film, check out Edgar Winter's "Winter Blues."

1.0 out of 5 stars Free Willie!, July 26, 2010
This review is from: Wag the Dog (Audio CD)
As the other reviews noted, the Willie Nelson tracks are missing. After watching this movie again, I found myself humming those songs in my head. It's an outrage that they're not here. "Good Old Shoe" was my favorite. I frankly don't even remember any of the rest of the songs on this disk.
