The car accident killed her mother Juliet and injured Laura Harte. Before dying, Juliet told Laura to see attorney Paul Shaw and to forgive her. Paul gives Laura a box containing newspaper clippings about Andrew Jardine, who died five years ago in New Orleans and who turns out to have been her father. Laura is shocked because her mother told her that her father was a Richard Harte who died in Nam just after their marriage.

Olivia Jardine won the Princess Hotel from Josh Logan's grandfather over sixty years ago. He is obsessed in his zeal to buy back the property, but Olivia refuses to sell though the hotel is losing money. She asks Josh to go to San Francisco and persuade her "other" grandchild to come to New Orleans. In turn, she offers Josh the same wager that won her the Princess. He accepts the terms, but soon Josh falls in love with Laura and she with him. However, once she learns the other condition of THE WAGER, she will probably flee back to California with a bitter taste in her mouth.

THE WAGER is an entertaining contemporary romance centering on the human ability to weather emotional storms and adapt to changes caused by them. The delightful story line is fun to read though Olivia's obsession with the Princess seems stretched even if it serves as the plot's prime catalyst. Laura and Josh are a fine couple and the secondary characters bring New Orleans to life, as Metsy Hingle shows she really knows the city. Fans will want Ms. Hingle to write a sequel or two after this joyous experience.

I read the other reviews before I decided to write mine and was struck by how many people could not put the book down- literally! Me too! I started it around 11:00pm and was still up reading the last page at 3am! Please more books with these characters!!!!

I thoroughly enjoyed The Wager. I got a copy of it at 6:30 p.m., started reading it at 7:30 p.m. and finished the book at 2:00 a.m. the next day. I could not put it down. I've been a fan of Ms. Hingle for a number of years and I have all her books. They just keep getting better and better. I truly believe this is her best book yet. Once again, I loved the way she develops the characters. Laura and Josh are a great, magnetic couple. You really care about them. Ms. Hingle makes you feel their emotions. When I saw Ms. Hingle at the recent RWA literacy booksigning in New Orleans, I asked her if there would be additional books based on other characters in this book. I really can see other books. I'd personally stand in line to get additional books about Katie or Alison and especially Nick Baldwin. He wasn't the hero in The Wager but he made my heart go pitter pat!!!

Unfortunately, his decision alienates her when she learns the truth, especially when she learns the other condition of THE WAGER. Laura struggles with issues of identity as she struggles to reconcile the past with the father she never knew. Disillusionment and bitterness with a father who married a socialite and had twins leaves her empty and frustrated. The path to healing and self-acceptance lends this marvelous depth and believability as she struggles with the past and with issues of the heart. An entertaining contemporary romance, THE WAGER richly portrays the struggles of the heart, although the premise seems a bit thin at times. With the rich southern background of New Orleans, portrayed with the grace of a true southerner, THE WAGER comes highly recommended.

Any thing that Metsy write turns to gold! This was a wonderful book which caused me to immediately purchase Behind the Mask. It's intriguing, warm and sexy and I highly recommend.

I love this book from beginning to end. Plot was excellent and characters were great. I finish this in one day. And with Sandra Brown as mentor she can never go wrong. Thank you it was truly as pleasure.

Wager by Metsy Hingle was an enjoyable book to read. The main character Laura is in for the shock of her life after her mother dies and she finds out she has kept a secret from Laura her whole life. Laura sets out to find out who her father and family really are after receiving a visit from Josh Logan, a family friend of the Jardine family. Laura and her new family are leary of each other and it isn't a smooth journey becoming one big happy family. Laura also wants to find out the mystery writer of a letter her mother kept suggesting she abort Laura all those years ago. She isn't sure who the author is and may never find out.

Wager was a well written book with just a few slow parts. Sometimes the romance of Laura and Josh just seemed to take too long. It would have been just as interesting to read about had the author not taken pages and pages to discuss them. The book seemed to move at a good pace and then came to a halt while these two characters tried to sort out their feelings. The secondary characters really added a lot to the story and were well developed. It seems the author really took the time to add them and make them a part of the story. The city of New Orleans and the hotel could also be considered characters the way they were written. I thought this was a nice touch to the story and made it more interesting.

Wager is a good book for anyone wanting to read of romance and mystery. There is something for everyone in this book!

Love this book. Lived in Louisiana for a while and the places she talks of I have been to. Very good writer and would read again. Louisiana history is very interesting. Living there you find out about there hertiage and belief's. Voodoo is very big.

This book is, overall pretty good. Not as suspenseful as Flash Point, but a good read. I was a little underwhelmed by the herione and her relationship with the hot bodied Josh Logan. There were times when the writing hit the mark on their relationship and other times when it came off a little flat. The ending was predictable. I wish the author had gone a little bit beyond the predictable to show us a flash of the future.
If you want to try Hingle, get FLASH POINT definitely. THE WAGER, though secondary, is a good read for a quiet Sunday afternoon.
