This review is from: Wagner: Arias & Scenes (Audio CD)
This excellent compendium of Wagner singing draws from depth -- RCA has many archival treasures from Melchior, Flagstad, and even a "Mild und leise" from Eileen Farrell, who much to our loss made precious few Wagner recorings. Those older items are ssprinkled in with outstanding modern numbers from Waltraud Meier (in best voice doing the Immolation Scene and Elisabeth's greeting from Tannhauser), Ben Heppner (the big Lohengrin aria), and Sherill Milnes (a fantastically vocalized Ode to the Evening Star -- I never thought of Milnes as a German baritone, but this except shows what might have been). Another highlight is a Meistersinger Quintet under Keilberth that makes you want to hear the whole opera under him.
Amazon has listed the program, and all I can add is that the compilers have done a sterling job. At the ridiculously low price being asked at Amazon Marketplace, this is a great bargain for true Wagnerites and those just getting to know his music. |
