5.0 out of 5 stars The Greatest Brahms 1st ever!, September 14, 2001

This review is from: Wagner: Bacchanale; Brahms: Symphony No. 1 (Audio CD)
Of all the great recordings of the Brahms 1 available, this is without question, the best. Yes, Stokowski, Walter, Szell, Furtwangler and Klemperer have all set precedents, but Horenstein is a cut above the rest. Horenstein's trademark tension management has never been move evident than on this recording. The precussion have a sense of strength and tightness that is just so exciting. The brass sound incredible! Credit must be given to excelent engineering of the RCA staff and the superb remastering by Chesky. I dare anyone to match the intensity achieved by Horenstein and the London Symphony. After hearing Horenstein, it will be hard to hear anyone else. Buy this recording and relish it. After relishing it, you're going to wonder why Horenstein has never been grouped with the great ones like Stokowski and Toscanini. It's a pitty that his art was not recorded as often as the other giants.
