This recording, with all its faults, demonstrates the extent to which the world today lacks good Wagner singers. All of them act with the voice, without ever resorting to the kind of hog-calling contest we hear so often today. Sawallisch whips up storms with the Bayreuth orchestra, and carries all before him with his dramatic interpretation, even if I would much prefer Wagner's later revision of the score. I do like to hear the redemption theme, both to finish the overture and the opera itself.

Possible buyers should be aware that, while the sound is never less than good, there are stage and audience noises. The singers are uniformly first class, though they all lose pitch at various moments. Rysanek, for example, is the most gloriously flaky Senta imaginable, but the voice often goes sharp under pressure. I can live with the faults, though, for the sake of the overall thrilling performance.
