5.0 out of 5 stars A Dream!, August 19, 2002

This little machine is an absolute dream!!!

My wife and I recently purchased an apartment with 14 foot ceilings. While initially trying to do the painting with a standard roller, brush, ladder and appropriate extensions we were absolutely miserable! Refilling a standard roller on an extension is a total nightmare (my arms aren't quite long enough to hold the tray 4 feet away while using the roller). That's not even mentioning that once a standard roller is reloaded the drips are inevitable. You end up spending one-third of your time on paining and two-thirds on reloading the roller, cleaning up spills, and dealing with the other logisitical issues (bumped walls, etc.)

With the power roller all you have to do is paint. There is no stopping to refill the roller, no stopping to refill the tray everything can and does stay under your control. Not to mention that once you're on a ladder you can comfortably stand without coming down each time to refill your supplies. This is a pure dream (and the price listed is also among the best I've seen).

Agreed, cleanup can be a long daunting task. A few tips:

* Get a big bucket (or if you have a big sink you're fine).
* Let everything (except the motor) soak in warm soapy water right away. If you have it, use OxiClean, it lifts paint right off a lot of the little crevices.
* Have a cleaning toothbrush handy as well as some toothpicks.

If you've got a job of any size this little wonder is definitely the way to go.

I'm painting the whole inside of my house (ex trim), and I want the work to go as well and painlessly as possible. I did a lot of research before deciding to purchase the Wagner Power Roller. After having used it on one room, I have abandoned using it in favor of the old-fashioned, conventional non power roller method.

WHAT I LIKE: clear instructions; delivers a smooth, even supply of paint; effective splatter guard.

WHAT I DISLIKE: lots and lots of parts that require lots and lots of cleaning; despite being cordless and having a nice shoulder strap, it's heavy and cumbersome; makes a lot of noise when in operation; seems to use an inordinate amount of paint.

My feeling is that there's little time savings by using this power roller, especially when you figure in the clean-up time. I will probably end up selling mine.

TIPS: Professional house painters warned me only to use high-quality paint, paint that will flow evenly and not gunk up the works. In the same vein, all parts must be thoroughly, obsessively cleaned after each use.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a timesaver!, February 23, 2002
This review is from: Wagner Power Products 0156060 Cordless Power Roller (Tools & Home Improvement)
I've been a proud owner of a Wagner Power Roller in excess of 9 years. I agree that it may take awhile to clean all of the individual parts, but the time saved painting is well worth it, (would you rather spend 4 hours painting and 20 minutes cleaning or 2 hours painting and 40 minutes cleaning)? Personally, I HATE PAINTING! The Wagner Power Roller feeds a continuos stream of paint to the roller from the inside. When I used to paint with a regular roller I used to get splatterd, (especially my glasses), and the drips off of the end of the roller would end up all over the place. Now, I don't even put floor coverings down and my glasses stay clean. If you leave the power unit on continuosly, on slow speed, you will use more paint but you do get better coverage. I "cycle" the power on and off to get a continuous smooth coat. I don't think I've ever had to put down two coats. Comparing this system to the "normal" roller method where you're constatntly "rolling out the paint" to get it even. The Wagner Power Roller puts down an even and smooth covering every time without having to have "messy" paint pans and wondering if you have too much or too little paint on the roller when you apply it to the wall or ceiling. It doesn't get much better than this!

I bought the power roller when we moved into our new home. Once you figure out how to use it, and you MUST read the manual, it was a breeze. I painted two rooms and a hallway in under two hours. The only drawback is the cleaning of the roller. You have to take it apart and rinse every single piece. It could take between 30-60 minutes. Otherwise, it is a great machine.

People were not kidding when they said that the clean-up of this machine is cumbersome, however, it was worth the effort. I used this machine to paint a 20'x50' room at my kid's dance studio and I managed to do it with one coat and with less paint and in half the time than it took to paint the other rooms with a standard roller. The handle does get a bit heavy after a while so be prepared for that.

2.0 out of 5 stars The clean-up isn't fun, September 28, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Wagner Power Products 0156060 Cordless Power Roller (Tools & Home Improvement)
Having painted the interior of the house with rollers, I was aware of paint usage and time. A close friend who heard me gripe was kind enough to give me one of these as a home improvement gift. He had not used one but saw it at a home improvement store and thought of me since I mentioned I was going to paint again. The unit is easy to operate and having not paid for it, it was great.

Depending on how you feed paint, the coverage to me wasn't even. (I was using Behr premium and it is a wonderful paint in regular roller applications.) The handle isn't comfortable and the waggling paint tube made it a bother. As for time savings, it did apply paint to the wall quickly and having to roll paint on a conventional roller wasn't missed.

What typically used a gallon, I used about 3/4 of a gallon. However since the roller will not pull all the paint out of the jug it was hard to tell. It also does not have the clearance to paint as far to the edge as a regular roller. Until I go back with a brush to do the trimming/edge painting I won't know. I suspect it will equal out.

The clean-up plain sucked. The pump unit has enough small parts with sharp angles to trap paint and cleaning into those corners was a bother. (You'll want a toothpick and toothbrush.) I watched as any time savings in painting were going to cleaning, I gave up after 45 minutes passed. I got it reasonably clean but I can still find paint in the crevices.

In the end, I discovered that these things sell for about $80. I doubt I'll use it again but it did do the job so it was okay. If I were considering purchasing one, no-way. That same $$ buys a couple gallons of paint and associated supplies; that is the better investment I think.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice little time saving machine, October 13, 2004
This review is from: Wagner Power Products 0156060 Cordless Power Roller (Tools & Home Improvement)
I just finished painting a 1,700 square foot garage with the Wagner Power Roller 929. It took a couple of cans of paint to get the flow speed down. The whole inside garage took around 20 hours to do. I used 2 coats of Behr paint and primer. I did the same job last year with a regular brush and roller that took about 40 hours to do. I would honestly say that this machine cut the painting time from 1/2 to 1/3 of the time. There is no constant bending and dipping the roller as with a regular roller. The cost was around $49.00 for the unit and around $7.00 for a Wagner roller cover (about the same at Home Depot). I would highly recommend this for a person painting a single family house. The only draw back is the cleaning time. After cleaning it a few times, it still took me about an hour to clean. The rollers were actually easier to clean than a regular ones due to the perforations in the roller cover. I would suggest reading the manual a couple of times before starting, and have a fairly big tub and drying area when cleaning. The main thing is to clean this immediatly after use. Do not wait to clean. I would say to clean the tubing first, and keep very good track of the small parts. Overall, this did a great job for the big project I had to paint (1,700 sq. feet). Clean up is a pain, but you have to weigh out the time (6 hours painting-1 hour cleaning or 12 hours painting-30 minutes clean up with a regular roller kit). Wagner also sells more more upgraded models at Home Depot that you can directly hook up a paint can to save even more time. This model 929 can be purchased form here, Wal-Mart, and Home Depot for around the same price.

5.0 out of 5 stars The test of tests., January 24, 2005

I own a 103 year old home, with 12 foot ceilings. It was time to paint the living room, and when I was looking at supplies, I saw this. I purchased it, got home cleaned the ceiling, with a broom. the ceiling was redone in the late 1980s with popcorn texture. i opened the box, read the directions and assembled the unit. I poured in the paint. Dutch Boy ceiling latex. The painter took about 2 minutes to prime and get paint to the roller head. I also had bought a long nap roller sleeve for the power roller. I climbed a ladder, and began to roll. With the drop guard on, I was able to roll fairly quick, and the paint flowed well. I had the unit on my shoulder, and had a gallon of ceiling white in it. So it was a bit heavy. But after I got the flow right, I would flip off the switch. I managed to get about a 18 foot by 16 foot celing done with less than one gallon of paint, and with no splatters! It did save me the time of reloading the roller. I got half of the room done. Then I finished the celing the next day with a spayer.

I also painted all of my walls with this. And the walls are large. 12 feet high, and the room is thirty one feet long! The paint calculator on the glidden website recommended three gallons of paint, but with doing the trim, and all the cutting in, I used less than one and a half gallons. I recommend. Read the directions. Learn to use the power switch to turn the pump on and off as you get the flow set right. Clean after use, it took me about a half an hour to clean the unit both times I used it. Use latex for ease of cleaning. The speed you can paint smoothly is amazing with this. I painted the walls in about an hour. The weight can be much, but you can set the unit on a step ladder, or in the case of a ceiling I hooked it onto the ladder so as to not have to carry it. The extension gives you about a extra 16" of reach.

About the fourth time the tube popped off the container and I watched paint squirting onto the floor, I took the whole thing outside, poured the paint back into the paint can, and resumed using the old-fashioned rollers. I will probably throw it away. I just opened it yesterday.

Also, if you're working in small spaces, this roller, with its somewhat long handle, will get in the way.

2.0 out of 5 stars Huge clean-up time cuts how useful it is, July 1, 2003

It does cut the rolling time in half as advertised - perhaps even a bit more than that. Cleanup, however, must be done obsessively (or the machine is ruined) and takes at least an hour (with latex paint - I dread the idea of cleaning oil-based paint out of this). The end result is it is only useful if you are rolling a really big area (say, at least 2 good sized rooms), otherwise your total time will be less with a hand roller.
And you really need to be sure of the cleaning - my in-laws borrowed it and claimed they cleaned it per the instructions - and it looked clean on first blush. But there was a bit of paint in a tiny area that ruined an (essential) tiny spring piece (not sold on amazon or in stores) - and it no longer operates at all.
