Worth It!,

Here's the bottom line. If you are going to paint a major project, then you are going to get messy. There's no way around it. If you are looking for a product that will make your job easy and clean, then keep looking -- and good luck finding one. This gun is easy to work with, but it makes a mess (paint on hands, messy clean-up, etc.).I painted my garage by hand for two hours, and I managed to spread a gallon of paint. My garage has cedar shingles, and I was not able to get in between the cracks to apply paint. Then I purchased this sprayer the next week. In two hours, I was able to apply SIX GALLONS, cover 20 TIMES the area I had covered by hand the previous week, and I was able to apply paint in between the shingles. Like I said, the clean up was a mess. The gun also "spats" paint if the suction line comes out of the paint source and sucks air, but what do you expect? I good tip: ALWAYS point the gun away from the surface as you apply the trigger because the gun usually "spats" if it has been off for a few minutes. When the paint atomizes, then spray away! This product is worth the money. I have used the Wagner product three times in the past -- painted two houses years ago and am now painting my garage. This model (1600) is improved over the one I used years ago to paint houses -- it has a return line that prevents a lot of dripping.

This is a great paint tool. After taping up a room and laying down some plastic to cover the furniture and floors, it took only 30 minutes to paint the entire room. I painted two colors and had to let the walls dry between colors. I think you need to spend the time to properly prepare the room as if you were going to roll it and carefully research the paint you want to use. Some paints are designed to be think and applied with a roller. Others are designed to be applied in a variety of ways like with an airless painter. Preparation is the key and patience to let the walls dry. If you want to slap paint on a wall then this is not for you. I recommend having two plastic buckets on hand. One to thin the paint and use to prime the pump. The other should have warm, soapy water in it. When you are done, take the parts off of the painter that are to be cleaned and drop them in for two hours. Then rinse. I also suggest that you have spare parts like the airator and piston. Spend a few more dollars and have backup parts. Also, ge the wide-tip latex nozzle. It is worth it and they can all be purchased through Amazon[.com] or at a local home improvement store. Rooms with many corners and tight spaces should be brushed or rolled. Larger rooms can easily be finished in a couple of hours from beginning to end.

Once I figured out how to set up the Wagner 220 it worked great. Its a big time saver you can paint a 12X12 room including ceiling in less than 1 hour. Good for larger jobs since clean up takes about 15 minutes. I would have given 5 stars if I did not have to thin the laytex paint before starting.

It's all in your technique,

I have six sets of louvered doors that needed to be painted. My past experience with a brush told me it was an enormous task. So I bought the Wagner spray painter. I've never used a sprayer before. Here's what I learned:* Spattering was my biggest problem the first time around. The latex paint I was using would clog after 5 or 10 minutes of inactivity (while waiting for a coat to dry). It was awful. The solution: I used Floetrol from Home Depot mixed at 6 oz per quart and added a few ounces of water. I also got an old toothbrush and brushed the nozzle between coats. No spattering. * Paint fog painted some items I hadn't intended. I did this in my garage and even with plastic and drop cloths I managed to get paint on the floor and my wife's garden tools. (Big problem!). The next time I used more drop cloths and more plastic. No problem. * Coverage can range from too light to too heavy. Here's the main thing I learned -- It's all in your technique. If you get up close as recommended ( 10 to 12 inches, I think ) you have to balance the speed of your motion with the distance away. If you're close and a bit slow you get too much paint. If you're back a bit, not enough. If you're too fast, not enough. Make sure you've got decent lighting. I thought I was doing perfectly only to discover I had put too much paint on once I reopened my garage door. * Cleanup really isn't that bad. Just get the parts into soapy water as soon as you're finished and use a toothbrush and one of those sponges with the green side for scrubbing. * Overall, you can do a great job. As often is the case, you'll get good at it just as you finish.

Most useless tool I've ever purchased.,

I originally purchased this sprayer to stain my deck and cedar sided house. It was a nightmare from the beginning. The unit will not draw the stain out of the bucket unless the bucket is held above the sprayer. Tried every nozzle, every tip, every setting with no luck. Finally discovered that it would work but if I only used the small paint container and diluted the stain to water viscosity. I then ended up spending more time adding paint to the container than I did painting.
Cleaning the unit is also horrible. It must be totally disassembled and pipe cleaners used to get all the paint out of the passages, otherwise it will be totally clogged. It clogs even while in use. Advertises 1600 psi. and "warning injection danger;" HA what a joke, my children have toy squirt guns that deliver more pressure. Like an idiot I thought that I had a bad unit so purchased the fix up parts (piston repair kit, o-rings) and rebuilt the thing. That was throwing good money after bad. Still doesn't work right. I still thought perhaps I was doing something wrong and mentioned it to some friends. Two of them related the very same story. Have written to the manufacturer and gotten no response. This unit is a piece of junk. Worst tool investment I've ever made.

After much frustration...,

...I finally finished the job after 1.) switching to the quart container and ditching the tubes that fed into a gallon can 2.) adding the Floetrol additive from Home Depot to prevent the clogging & splattering 3.) called Wagner for support. I do have to say Wagner's support was excellent. That's the only reason I gave it 3 stars instead of 2. I agreed to try a few things before requesting a replacement unit although I probably didn't have to. The rep gave me her direct extension and needless to say, I did end up calling her back and requesting the replacement. This was before I added the Floetrol which made all the difference in the world. I'd also learned not to hold the button down for more than 8-10 seconds at a time. You can't leave the unit sitting for more than 3 - 4 minutes or the paint will dry and clog it up. A quick rinse of the internal parts fixed that, but it was a pain. I ended up finishing the job with the old unit. A brand new unit arrived from Wagner the next day. All in all, I'm glad I had it, despite the problems. A brush or roller would have taken much, much longer. This review is on the 2-speed 2200 PSI version.

Wagner Power Sprayers,
By Steve Isenhour (Corpus Christi, TX) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Wagner Power Products 220XXX 1,600 PSI One-Speed Power Painter (Tools & Home Improvement)
I purchased the 2400-PSI spray painter, and wanted to let you know I found the product dreadful. (The lower power 1600-PSI would be even worse with this problem).
Without warning, the spray would start "spitting". I spent hours of effort and time making spray adjustments; making sure the can was full; making sure the sprayer was level; using different attachments; cleaning the heads; with no improvement. I am confident they manufacture an inferior product and could not recommend this to anyone. With all the mess and time of cleanup, I was further convinced I wasted my money. I came to grips that their product was useless when I realized I was painting as much with my roller fixing the blotches, as I was spray painting. I put away the painter, grabbed my roller and painted two rooms in about 1/2 the time, with a lot less mess to clean up. After sharing my experience with some friends, several said that is typical of the product. (Too bad the advertising leads one to believe otherwise.) Sorry, but I will discourage anyone I talk to from buying a Wagner paint product.

Great paint sprayer!,

I've painted my 21' sailboat, my travel trailer and now am painting my house interior with this gun. It's easy to use and does a super job. I can't believe all the negative comments I see here. I've never tried the additive mentioned. It is a bugger to clean up, but it saves so much time in painting and does such a good job that a little clean up isn't a big deal. I'm a videographer, not a handyman, so if I have good results with this tool, you should too.

Not for small or easy jobs.,

Reviewer James R Orr is right on the money. I own the "Wide Shot Plus 2400 PSI 2-Speed" but my experience painting a 10' x 14' shed is identical to James' excellent description. I sympathize too with Gene Taylor's sentiments. If you have a small or easy (flat surface) job, this tool isn't worth it. Using it is a commitment in time, patience, and cleanup. If you have a large or difficult job though, I recommend it - you'll still cuss and hate it and make a big mess.

Good sprayer, so much faster than brush or roller!,
By
This review is from: Wagner Power Products 220XXX 1,600 PSI One-Speed Power Painter (Tools & Home Improvement)
I'm using the 2200psi 2 speed model.
This is a -spray- painter, so expect anything nearby to get paint on it. Tape and cover anything you don't want painted, and go to it! So much faster than brushes or rollers. You will need to allow a lot of time for clean up, anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour. I'm using it with the hoses, but I have it pulling paint from a bucket on my back rather than a can sitting on the floor. I have no problems with it feeding paint. I am using latex paint as it comes from the can, no thinning or additives. I'm painting my house, so if it spatters now and then, it makes no difference, but I have not noticed a lot of spattering. Like spray from a can, when you first hit it, it will spatter a little, and if the paint gets low and it sucks some air it will spatter. This is -not- for really small jobs, simply because clean-up takes so long. But even using a brush or roller you spend time cleaning up. Heed the warning about the spray being an injection/amputation hazard. It may be a mist a few inches out, but right at the nozzle it -is- at 1600 to 2400 psi, depending on the model, and can cut a finger right off. |
