5.0 out of 5 stars Janssen's Great Wolfram and Berger's lovely Shepherd, May 14, 2008
This review is from: Wagner: Tannhauser (complete opera, recorded at Bayreuth Festival 1930) - Karl Elmendorff, conductor (Audio CD)
Very much worth hearing are these excerpts preserved from the 1930 Bayreuth cast, cond. by the distinguished K. Elmendorff. Toscanini had done Tannhauser at Bayreuth the previous year, and had rehearsed with parts of this cast and the orchestra. And the cast is well worth hearing: Pilinszky as Tannhauser, then Mueller and Jost-Arden, and Andresen and a young Janssen, and the absolutely delightful Erna Berger as the Shepherd.
