5.0 out of 5 stars Three of the Very Best , August 22, 2008
By Brantwood (Buffalo By USA) - See all my reviews
I have several recordings of this great opera - the best opera Weber never wrote - such a wonderful midpoint between Weber and Wagner-the-master - but this is the one I come back to most often - and always for the same reason. As far as I am concerned there can never be a Stuermann better than Wunderlich's (how can you be better than perfect?), a Daland more endearing than Frick's (indisputably the greatest German bass of all time), and a Hollander more intriguing and sympathy-inspiring than Fischer-Dieskau's. The greatest tenor, bass and baritone of their generation, all in splendid voice, all together in a masterpiece. Heaven! I'm not sure who I regard as the "best" Senta or Erik, but that's irrelevant really, considering the riches offered by this outstanding trio of German stars. But I must not forget to praise Konwitschny's conducting - for me the pace and drive are everything they should be. A recording to live with.

5.0 out of 5 stars New release, May 7, 2008
This is a new release of the classic performance with Konwitschny...this and the other are both without librettos, but this one is a bit cheaper and a bit thiner than the original Berlin Classics release, which I would totally get!

See the main page for reviews and enjoy!
