This is the ideal performance for anyone who thinks that the Flying Dutchman should sound like it's a swirling musical firestorm. The intensity of Sawallisch's conducting, and the passionately responsive playing from the orchestra, set this performance apart. The soloists are also superb. The sound quality is fairly good, and effectively captures Sawallisch's extreme dynamics (thus contributing to the intensity of the musical experience). The occasional audience sounds (coughing, etc.) can be distracting during the quiet passages, but I don't know of a better recorded performance of this work
