Editorial Reviews

Their songs recall the 80s guitar army of Sonic Youth with the captivating lyrics and vocal stylings of Tom Petty or Bruce Springsteen. Walls of guitar - acoustic, electric, twelve string - douse each track of this debut, threatening to cast the band into space rock territory, but the melodies and immediately identifiable lyrics keep these songs grounded. It's one of those albums that each of us holds onto tightly. They get moved from apartment to apartment through the years; they're songs on the radio that follow us from town to town. They evoke waves of nostalgia and grow more poignant with each new bump along the road.

I've been following War On Drugs on their current tour, and will be home by the 16th of December when they roll into Philadelphia; home for both them and me. I haven't had this much fun since I rocked around the southwest with Wilco, wondering why no one has thought to set these two bands on the road together, where they'd hang like windblown weathered signs, directing demented fans of the sublime to venues filled with crackling speakers, droning keyboards, layered lo-fi acoustic buzz, wondering shifting lead guitars, and sleepy bleary-eyed percussions that create a touchable organic atmospheric haze ... one where they're rocking me back so far I nearly fall over. Then again this could just be my present state of mind, a state War On Drugs enhances to the max, leaving me stumbling for a seat, and stuttering for words.

War On Drugs isn't so much a band as it's a concept, one similar to what Pete Kember [Sonic Boom] creates with Spectrum, the brainchild of visionary Adam Granducial, a man's who's influences are worn on his sleeve, bending notes and ideas to shimmer a new musical vision across a star filled sky. If you're new to"Wagonwheel Blues," it's not like their later material, never the less, it is the groundwork which serves as a base for their future outings. Most of the songs are top notch, save for the two instrumentals, and I've know idea why they were included, other then to add more product, because they certainly don't act as lead-ins to the following numbers. There are some delightful surprises as well ... as when "A Needle In Your Eye #16" hits the four minute mark and you're suddenly aware that the same two chords have been played over and over for the entire song, yet the raptured intoxication is so uplifting that it's impossible not to smile and shake one's head with befuddlement and dive back in for more.

The War on Drugs is littered with pleasant contradictions. That goes for the U.S. government's real "War on Drugs" as well as this band from the delightfully trashy musical playground that is Philadelphia. The group combines a refreshing plethora of completely distinctive sound combinations like, for instance, Sonic Youth coupled with Tom Petty. Lush guitars hearken back to early Bruce Springsteen while dreamy vocals ring reminiscent of The Jesus and Mary Chain. Synth-soaked and audibly fulfilling, The War on Drugs will, quite possibly, attract many a Clap Your Hands Say Yeah fan as well as aficionados of shows that leave your ears ringing for days. Their classic yet modern debut album Wagonwheel Blues, released by Secretly Canadian in June, yields thick, textured soundscapes that might serve as a fitting soundtrack for those times when you're sticking your head out the car window on the highway.

This is an excellent debut from a band that will hopefully gain more exposure in the near future. The War on Drugs combine an Americana influence with a little bit of guitar experimentation. It's great summer music, and it totally kicks butt. It makes me smile every time I listen to it.

Wheel Blues. While I absolutely love their last release Lost In The Dream, I can't say the same about Wagonwheel Blues. I didn't like anything on it. But I hope this won't deter anyone from buying Lost In The Dream. I can't stop listening to it. Addictive!!!!

Voice is reminiscent of Dylan. Music is a modern psych-folk. Definitely a solid album. I would recommend this, you wont be disappointed.
