5.0 out of 5 stars Not Just For Yoga....
"Wai Lana 137 Yoga Mat"....

A mat is a must have for anyone practicing Yoga. The Wai Lana mat will serve you well. It's a "sticky" mat, that will keep you from slipping and help you hold your poses. It's much more comfortable than working on the floor, as it has a nice cushioning as well. It's long enough(1/8"Hx24"Wx68"L) to flow from one posture to the next...

1.0 out of 5 stars Way too slick. Couldn't even use it.
I just received this mat and tried it for the first time at my Yoga class. It was so slick I couldn't even use it. Even in downward dog, my hands were sliding forward and my feet were sliding backward. Maybe I got a dud, but this mat is completely useless to me. Should be 0 stars.

It's long enough(1/8"Hx24"Wx68"L) to flow from one posture to the next and I find I move with greater ease and stability with this mat.

It's not just for Yoga though. I use this mat for all of my floor exercises. If I'm working on push ups, abs or my legs, I find it a great help in keeping carpet fibers and dust away from my face.

It's very lightweight, durable, easy to clean(washes up with cool water and mild detergent), and rolls up for easy storage.
At first one edge(the back) stayed slightly rolled up and that bothered me a little while I was working out, but I rolled it up in the opposite direction and it's fine now.

According to the care instructions, the mat will increase in softness and stickiness over time. This is a great buy, in just a short time, I have already gotten my money's worth. It comes with care intrauctions and an 800 number for customer service and questions.

Highly recommended for your workouts

5.0 out of 5 stars Two Sides to All Yoga Mats; Know Which Side is Up, January 29, 2005
This review is from: Wai Lana Yogi Yoga Mat (Sports)
Yoga mats come in three basic thicknesses. At 1/8" this mat is of average thickness. At 24" x 68" it is also the standard width and length. Mats that are about half a thick as this one are good for travel or placing under a thicker mat to provide more traction. The thick mats (3/16") are about 50% thicker than this one and are designed for those who need or want extra cushion.

There are two sides to this and nearly all yoga mats. Look carefully at the 'bumps' on each side of the mat. The larger bumps are designed to face upwards to cushion your hands, feet, and knees during poses while keeping your body from dangerously slipping out of alignment. The smaller bumps are designed to face downwards to grip the floor and keep the yoga mat from sliding. Many mats have a label on one end with the name of the brand. This is typically, but not always, located on the 'up' side. The bumps will tell you for sure.

This yoga mat will increase in softness and stickiness with use. (So do most mats.) They start out mildly sticky and increase in stickiness the more they are used. You will want to wash your mat when it first arrives so as to remove the thin film they get on their surface during the manufacturing process. Instructions for washing the mat are included. Once you've washed and dried your mat you're ready to begin! After using it for a while, if you find the mat decreasing in stickiness each time you pull it out, this is the typical sign that a light coating of dust or too much body sweat has accumulated on your mat and it needs a light hand washing with very diluted soap and water. After washing, roll your mat in a thick towel to squeeze out the excess water, otherwise it will take forever to dry in the air. Then, air dry your mat unrolled, inside, and away from sunlight. (Hanging over the shower bar works nicely.)

When you first unroll your mat you will find one end to be a bit curled. Simply alternate the direction you roll your mat (top outside once, then bottom outside next) or the end you start from (curled end once, flat end next time) and you'll find it straightening out more or less over time.

I recommend buying your own yoga mat even if your yoga studio or gym provides them for you. I've worked in many studios and gyms over the years. Sometimes management has mats cleaned often, sometimes not. If you bring your own mat you always know where it's been. :o) Plus, owning your own mat may encourage you to begin valuable practice at home.

For my students who have trouble with their knees in some of the poses requiring the body weight to rest on a knee, I recommend temporarily folding over one end of the mat to get double cushion under the knee while still leaving one layer under the rest of the body. This saves you having to haul more than one mat out each time you practice which can be discouraging especially to the beginner.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great yoga mat, September 27, 2004
By
This review is from: Wai Lana Yogi Yoga Mat (Sports)
This is such a great yoga mat - the quality is far superior to any I have had before. My mom is a yoga teacher and she recommends the Wai Lana products to everyone, including the exercise videos for inbetween classes.

I was really impressed with the stickiness and non-slip super grip qualities.

Love it. Now I need to get the mini version for my son who tries to edge me off my mat as I'm using it!

Very happy with my mat, really recommend them.

4.0 out of 5 stars This mat works !, June 30, 2004

I feel this mat has been better than some other several mats I have used during Yoga classes or some owned by my friends (e.g. ones from Walmart).

I have used 3 times and it worked perfect, NOT slippery at all.

Why not 5 star ? I am not sure about the durability of this product. Hope I can re-mark 5 stars after a year or so.

If you need the thicker mat (1/4 inches), don't buy one 1/4 thick mat but buy 2 of these 1/8 mats so that you may share your Yoga time with your visitors and friends !!

4.0 out of 5 stars Terrific but sometimes skids--buy two!, November 11, 2004
This review is from: Wai Lana Yogi Yoga Mat (Sports)
This mat tends to skid on tile if you don't double up, so order two. But it's excellent and cushioning for yoga, pilates, and perfect to place beneath a BodyDome.

It's wide enough and long enough and has the perfect grip without making you feel like you're constantly getting stuck to the mat as you go through your various poses. I've had this mat since April and I've never looked forward to my yoga sessions as much :) As another reviewer mentioned, it's perfect for other things than yoga as well. Excellent purchase for the price.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent mat, May 16, 2006

I have two of these mats - one for home practice and one that I leave at my yoga studio. They are very durable, slightly thicker that other mats and retain slip resistance even during sweaty Bikram yoga sessions.

I have bought cheaper and more expensive mats. This is a very good price point/value for someone who practices regularly, but perhaps not daily. I would never buy a cheaper mat again (they are too thin and don't hold up to long-term use), but I think that this is as good of quality as a mat that I bought for $45.

3.0 out of 5 stars Average good yoga mat, March 19, 2008
By
This review is from: Wai Lana Yogi Yoga Mat (Sports)
I do like the "stickiness" and cushion of this mat, but for the $12.99 I paid 2 years ago and combined for free Super saver shipping it very good, but for nearly 20 bucks it's average and not super impressive. I am 5'3" and find it just right for me.
I use it mostly at home but I took it to a highly regarded and priced class of a local yoga teacher and one of the first comments made to me was how narrow the width of my mat was =-/ Oh, well of course being small I had never really noticed because the mat is AVERAGE, but you may if you are taller and wider. For the current price plus burning fuels to get one I would recommend a local sports shop or general Dept. store.
If you need to find the "up" side the mat is engraved/moulded with the Wai Lana name and has a sticker on the correct side to use(I will upload). It also comes with instructions to wash off the residue from manufacturing(?) before use. If you have slipping problems try washing it as described- stick it in the tub with lukewarm water and a good rinsable, mild soap or detergant.
