4.0 out of 5 stars You'll Be "Wailin" If You Don't Buy This!, November 13, 2010
This review is from: Wailin (Audio CD)
Hank Mobley's "Dippin," featuring Harold Mabern on piano, was among the first dozen jazz CDs I ever bought. Funny then that it took me twenty years to get around to purchasing one of his albums as a leader. "Wailin" collects the original LPs "Workin & Wailin," recorded June 30, 1969, and "Greasy Kid Stuff," from January 26, 1970, both recorded by Rudy Van Gelder at his Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey studio. The first session has a frontline of Virgil Jones and George Coleman, while the latter showcases Lee Morgan and Hubert Laws, but both albums feature the rhythm trio of Mabern, Buster Williams and Idris Muhammed. There are some obligatory boogaloo/soul numbers here, but aside from a miserable cover of the Jackson 5's "I Want You Back," everything is solid modern jazz, much like the music Lee Morgan was making for Blue Note at this time. Like many Prestige two-fers, "Wailin" has been remaindered so get it now at a low price or you'll be wailing later.
