Rick's Underated Masterpiece,

I was a Rick Sprigfield Fan when I first heard "Speak To The Sky". His debut American LP ("Rick Springfield" 1972) had the Beatle-esque/ Raspberries Style (Their 1st LP debuted at the same time) that I really enjoy. When "Wait For Night" came out in 1976, I was shocked to see how far his guitar & piano playing had come. His talent went completely unnoticed because of his "Teen Idol/ Pretty Boy" image. I think that alone shows how shallow the critics at that particular time were. While I'm sure there were some critics applauding his developing songwriting, musical, and recording skills, this record-unfortunately still fell on deaf ears. This was probably due to the fact that this LP was released on a smaller subsidiary label of RCA's called "Chelsea Records". The owner of the label was Wes Farrell known primarily for his role in The Partridge Family's recordings. I think this also added to the "Teen Idol" attitude towards this record. Any of this negative attitude was completely unjustified. There are Gems to be found on this album. "Old Gangsters Never Die" is such a great tune. I agree with others who have claimed that this may be one of his best tunes. "Jessica", "Take A Hand" (which almost cracked the Top 40-#41- with it's tip of the hat to Chuck Berry), "Archangel" (which is another standout track in Rick's catalogue) and "Goldfever" are among some of his finest. While there are a couple of schmaltzy "Manilow-wannabes", don't let that discourage you. Even the syrupy ballads grow on you with each listen. I truly think this album rivals some of Sir Paul's and Sir Elton's (whose rhythm section is actually on this recording) finest from those years. Give it a chance. If you like good natured Pop/ Rock with some strong hooks and a sense of ambition proving he was worthy of some recognition, then you should check this out. This LP definitely foreshadowed the success of "Working Class Dog". It's almost as if "Wait For Night" served as a stepping stone towards "Jessies Girl". I am so glad it finally came out on CD!!! Rick Rocks!!!

One of the most underrated albums ever made. Had this been released originally on any other label than flailing Chelsea Records, it would have stormed the charts. The musicianship and arrangements are top notch - Dee Murray and Nigel Olsson shine in awesome virtuosity on their respective instruments and vocals. Rick actually does quite well on the pianos and guitars, and the sound is tight. Why there was such a delay in getting this released - I have no idea. To me it is an essential part of the Rick Springfield catalogue. It cannot begin to express the thrill in finding it here. My day has been made!
