Rick's Underated Masterpiece,

I was a Rick Sprigfield Fan when I first heard "Speak To The Sky". His debut American LP ("Rick Springfield" 1972) had the Beatle-esque/ Raspberries Style (Their 1st LP debuted at the same time) that I really enjoy. When "Wait For Night" came out in 1976, I was shocked to see how far his guitar & piano playing had come. His talent went completely unnoticed because of his "Teen Idol/ Pretty Boy" image. I think that alone shows how shallow the critics at that particular time were. While I'm sure there were some critics applauding his developing songwriting, musical, and recording skills, this record-unfortunately still fell on deaf ears. This was probably due to the fact that this LP was released on a smaller subsidiary label of RCA's called "Chelsea Records". The owner of the label was Wes Farrell known primarily for his role in The Partridge Family's recordings. I think this also added to the "Teen Idol" attitude towards this record. Any of this negative attitude was completely unjustified. There are Gems to be found on this album. "Old Gangsters Never Die" is such a great tune. I agree with others who have claimed that this may be one of his best tunes. "Jessica", "Take A Hand" (which almost cracked the Top 40-#41- with it's tip of the hat to Chuck Berry), "Archangel" (which is another standout track in Rick's catalogue) and "Goldfever" are among some of his finest. While there are a couple of schmaltzy "Manilow-wannabes", don't let that discourage you. Even the syrupy ballads grow on you with each listen. I truly think this album rivals some of Sir Paul's and Sir Elton's (whose rhythm section is actually on this recording) finest from those years. Give it a chance. If you like good natured Pop/ Rock with some strong hooks and a sense of ambition proving he was worthy of some recognition, then you should check this out. This LP definitely foreshadowed the success of "Working Class Dog". It's almost as if "Wait For Night" served as a stepping stone towards "Jessies Girl". I am so glad it finally came out on CD!!! Rick Rocks!!!

One of the most underrated albums ever made. Had this been released originally on any other label than flailing Chelsea Records, it would have stormed the charts. The musicianship and arrangements are top notch - Dee Murray and Nigel Olsson shine in awesome virtuosity on their respective instruments and vocals. Rick actually does quite well on the pianos and guitars, and the sound is tight. Why there was such a delay in getting this released - I have no idea. To me it is an essential part of the Rick Springfield catalogue. It cannot begin to express the thrill in finding it here. My day has been made!

This album is another example of his excellent song writing and musical talents. The songs each tell a detailed story and take you there into the moment of what was happening. I am a huge Rick Springfield fan, and when I saw this was released on CD, I jumped and ordered it immediately. This album is actually Pre-Jessie's Girl, and it's a shame it didn't do better for Rick when it was released. The selections all follow classic Rick stylings. The Rock rocks and the Ballads are beautiful. My favorite selections are "One Broken Heart" and "Million Dollar Face". One Broken Heart is a rocker, and it tells the listener that just because your heart was broken, if you keep your mind and heart open a new love will come along to repair the breaks. Again, very classic RS styling. If you are a fan, do yourself a favor and get this album!

I was lucky enough to have the Wait for Night album in the early 1980's. It is one of Rick's best bodies of work and I am thrilled to FINALLY have it on CD. I wish Rick would perform a track from this in his live show.

This has always been one of my favorite albums. I had it on LP and just discovered it's release on it CD. It say I was ecstatic would be an understatement. Jazzy rock tunes and sensual ballads make up this highly underrated collection. Definitely a great add for Rick fans.

Wait for night- Never really saw the light of day,

"Wait for night" is the "album" from 1976 By Rick Springfield and unfortunately for Rick this release by him went mostly unnoticed
due to the record label it was released on called Chelsea had folded. This happens to be my favorite hidden gems in Rick's early discography. I still have my very played cassette, and I am thrilled to see this finally on CD. The songs on here are very well done and by all rights, should have been a commercial success for Springfield, And Rick had some other musicians on here notably Dee Murray and Nigel Olesson two of Elton John's band members. so the musical accompaniments are excellent and really showcases Rick's song writing talents. Two of my personal favorites are "Old Gangsters Never Die" and "One Broken Heart". Rick has the talent in his song writing- at least for me- in his storytelling- as with any good storyteller I can almost "picture" the ideas that come across in these songs especially from the tracks from this particular CD called "Million Dollar Face" and the love-torn ballad "Treat Me Gently in the Morning". So for the die hard fans of Rick that have been "Wait-ing for Night' --and day to finish their CD's of Rick collection EXCELLENT. For those who want to sample Rick's earlier work this is a good start. Thanks for reading! |
