I picked up this book at the PASS summit 2011 give away! I am glad i got my hands on this book - otherwise, i might have missed the chance of learning about wait stats in a practical manner. I like it that concepts are explained with examples and that helps me better appreciate the concept.

Also, if you are new to SQL server tuning, then you would be glad that you have this weapon under your belt! And even if you are familiar with wait stats, then there are lots of concepts that you could explore via this book.

Pinal and Rick do a great job covering the techniques of tuning using wait stats in SQL Server. I picked up the book at the PASS conference and had a hard time putting it down. It's chalk full of great details and examples are great and very applicable. I'd encourage any SQL Server professionals to pick this one up. It won't take many pages for you to realize a return on your investment.

This book could be called 101 Best Wait Stats Solutions, and the title would only be inaccurate because there are more than 101 solutions in this book. There are almost 500 different wait types in SQL Server 2008, and that number is only going to increase over the next versions, so learning how to deal with wait stats now is very important. Even better, the author (Pinal Dave) has said in his blog that he will answer questions from the book if you contact him, and he has already addressed a few questions in recent posts. He also mentioned that this will be an "evolving" book, with updated versions that have reader's questions answered, so we have that to look forward to, as well.

I think the best part about this book is that the author uses real world examples from his own experience in dealing with SQL Server, and also encourages feedback from his readers about what to add and improve. It's almost like taking a SQL Server wait stats course, but you just have to pay for the book. And since this is the Kindle version, you pretty much have a great reference book in the palm of your hand - no need to drag around a back pack full of heavy books. The graphics from the examples in this book are preserved in the Kindle version. They are still easy to read on the black and white Kindle screen and there are no problems with the formatting.

Over all I have to give this book a full five stars!
