Book Description

July 1, 2001
The year is 1940, and the War is beginning to affect everyday life. Foreign travel is no longer feasible, so holidays at home enjoy a new lease of life. For the Castle family, this is good financial news. They have owned the cafe on the beach at St David's Well for three generations and business -- in the shape of ice-creams and teas on the sand - is booming.

But not everyone in the family is happy. Beth Castle has become engaged to Bobby Clements who is waiting to be called up, but he longs for excitement before it is too late. Beth discovers two young homeless girls, Maude and Myrtle, sleeping on the beach and she resolves to help them. But when she eventually tracks down their older brother, Micky, the immediate attraction which springs to life between them is another problem she will have to face.

Beth's sister Lilly is secretly having an affair with Phil Martin, who is married with two children. When she becomes pregnant, he can do nothing -- his wife and children are his first priority. But after he is reported missing, she discovers he has been hiding a terrible secret. Their brother Ronnie is happy working at the cafe but his girlfriend Olive wants him to leave, and resents the unspoken assumption that she will join the business when they marry. In a fury, she decides to ensure that there will be no cafe for her to join. . .
