5.0 out of 5 stars Zox Rox my Sox, October 4, 2005
This review is from: Wait (Audio CD)
A friend told me about Zox one year ago, and my musical life has never been the same. I must say that they have the most original sound that I have heard lately. "The Wait" carries the tradition of Zox excellent that began with "Take Me Home". The edgy guitar intro to "Thirsty" catches you in the heart, and the emotional violin throughout "Anything But Fine" tears the heart right out. However, "Can't Look Down" has to be the most uplifting song I've heard in years, and my friends and I sing it at the top of our lungs over and over again in our small dorm room. "The Wait" is most certainly this year's must buy album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not surprisingly, the best!!!!!, December 5, 2005
This review is from: Wait (Audio CD)
Zox SERIOUSLY brings so much talent to the table, whether it be on stage or on CD. I was so anxious to buy The Wait, after enjoying the classic Take Me Home CD. I was lucky to preview many of the songs on The Wait at live shows, but now I can listen to the wonderful melodies any time I want! Many people seem to really like "Anything But Fine", "Carolyn", and "Thirsty" as the pinpoint songs on this album. All 3 of these songs demonstrate amazing musical ability and they are wonderful for a full fluctuation of moods. My personal favorites, though, are "Fallen," "A Little More Time," and "Spades." "Fallen" is incredible, and the back-up vocals are amaaazing. I love the beat to it and the entire mood behind the song. It all just flows so perfectly. "A Little More Time" is so upbeat it could make me smile after stubbing my toe. Eli's voice sparkles in this song. "Spades" has great back-up vocals as well, but my favorite part of this song is the percussion. The drumming is fantastic and fun!

Every member of Zox adds sooo much to the unique sound of the band, and this CD proves it in every way. I cannot WAIT for their next CD, and this one makes a star appearance in my car, computer, discman and life! If you like this, go out and buy Take Me Home as well!!! It is very different, but you are sure to love it as well!

5.0 out of 5 stars impressive, September 3, 2005
This review is from: Wait (Audio CD)
I wasn't so big on Take Me Home. But The Wait, three years to be exact, is worth it. This album is better written AND produced. The group sounds cleaner. The arrangement builds and falls in a unique way, structurally different than the typical rock band. The instrumental sections draw as many ears as the catchy chorus hooks. Zox uses a wide range of styles, from folky violin melodies to hard rock jams, helping me separate each song from the next The lead singer has a powerful voice. At his highpoints I can really feel the emotion (*Carolyn *Can't Look Down). Not to mention, the melody and counterpoint of the album create memorable jingles in your head. Well worth the investment. I wish Zox the best of luck promoting this album, spreading the wealth around the nation, and into a major labels hands.

I saw this band open for Rusted Root and they were great! I could not believe I had not heard of them before. This cd is good, I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because I don't like every single on the cd but most of them are good. Their music is upbeat, thoughtful, and creative. Very hard to catagorize, but that's one of the reasons I like it. Hearing the sound from the voilin is a nice change from most rock you hear today. I would recommend this cd to anyone and go see them live!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent album!, September 16, 2005

I had never heard Zox until last night when they played at my school, (Brown University) where they are alums. I was blown away and bought this album. It is twice as good as I thought it would be. This is absolutely fantastic music, and best of all it sounds like nobody else today.

Some will describe Zox's music as ska with a violin. This is inaccurate. Only two songs on this album even sound like ska, and there are no horns. Every song is unique and incorporates many different styles, but somehow the whole album still retains a core sound that you can identify with Zox. Impressive.

The lyrics are fantastic, as is the singing. Good melodies and some very effective backing vocals from the bassest and violinist. The guitar playing is very creative, spanning styles from ska to rock and i can even hear some iron maiden-styled melodies at times. The bass player is excellent with very good bass lines that NEVER shadow the guitar. The drumming fits the songs perfectly and is tasteful and accents the music as it should.

As for the violin...what an effective indcorporation. The violin is used in many different ways in different songs, sometimes making noises that I had no idea a violin can make. The violin parts range from repetitive short patterns that sound like they are coming from a synth loop rather than an instrument, to folk like melodies. Some how they have incorporated violin in a very unique way that absolutely never sounds cheesy or unnatural.

Every song on here is infectiously catchy, but at the same time there is so much great instrumentation going on. The verses often build with each repitition, keeping the songs extremely interesting all the way through. These guys are doing something that I almost never hear these days: making catchy, song based rock that is unique and has excellent instrumentation. Many bands either don't have the talent to write catchy infectious songs, or else don't have the skill to write multi-layered, intriguing instrumentation that involves the listener even without the vocals being added.

This is highly recommended to anyone who likes great, creative music. I will definitely be picking up their first album, even if it is half as good as this it will be well worth it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Want some phenominal music?, August 27, 2005

Zox has done it again. Another superb set of tracks with solid music, the violin that defies the laws of rock music, and lyrics that really hit home. Each track is spell-bindingly unique to the music world, and great for rockin' out! I've heard Zox play live twice, and both "The Wait" and "Take me Home" are pure reflections of their live performances. These guys are the next big thing, it's just a matter of time...

5.0 out of 5 stars better than most things out there, November 9, 2006
This review is from: The Wait (Audio CD)
I am a huge fan of zox. Spencer's fiddle gives a unique sound to their music, and the lyrics are the types of poems song writers look for... i am surprised they have not blown up in the four years I've been following them. I highly recommed their previous album available on their website as well as this one , and catching a live show, which usually has some great back-up harmonies, instrumntal solos and cover songs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sublime Sounds, June 26, 2006

Just saw them live at the Warped Tour. My forty-six year old music loving ears perked up at this great sound...excellent writing, novel and intelligent musicianship, finally something new and "get in to it"-able! These guys could be Sublime gone to college.

Only criticism of the CD's are that the bass and drum mix could be hotter. Doesn't have quite the drive of the live sound. SUPPORT THIS BAND! They get it!
