Six Feet Under,
By Taryn A. Harris (New York, NY USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Waiting (Audio CD)
I must confess, I'd never heard of the Devlins until I bought the Six Feet Under soundtrack. I'm in love with "Waiting". It's honestly the most beautiful song I've heard in awhile. It makes me think of someone very dear to my heart. On the strength of this one song, I plan to buy the entire album. If you like the Devlins, please check out Neutral Milk Hotel.

This is a fantastic album. I first heard the song Surrender during the first Lilith Fair tour in Washington state. They played it as "mid music" between groups. It took me several years to figure out who the group and song were but it was well worth the effort. The Devlins are outstanding!

I first heard The Devlins at Tori Amos' Phoenix, Arizona concert and was blown away! I love the lyrics and the sound. This CD is well worth the money and I'm looking forward to getting Drift- the Devlins first album.

You can stop waiting now...and listen,

From the start..the shuffling noise the first few key strokes on the piano, the mood of your heart is taken on a trip, a journey or perhaps a vivid exploration of feeling, something deep within. There are no songs on this album that don't get to me and make me listen and absolutely fall in love with every chord and word. Something about the rhythm draws you in, something about the cool whispers that become oh so much warmer in the vocals that devour you and in the end you are asked simply if you will 'kill with me tonight' and I think in that point of the trance you might just say yes. What choice did you have? It was just so natural so right that you listen - that you feel every inch of yourself become part of what you hear.

I, too, saw the Devlins open for Tori Amos, and I, too, passed on her new CD in favor of this CD. This band is great! I also found their first CD, Drift, in a used CD store locally, and it's great, too! My favorite track has to be "Surrender" -- what a gem! Glad I went to see Tori, even though these guys impressed me more than she did...

I first heard The Devlins performing with the Tori Amos concert in Abq. I must say that I skipped the Tori Amos cd and bought the Devlins cd instead. Great cd, I'm looking forward to getting more Devlin cds....

I heard the excellent Tom Lord-Alge remix of 'Waiting' on the Six Feet Under soundtrack. I was immediately keen to hear more. However, the fact that the album is called 'Waiting', and that the sleeve notes contained the lyrics for that song only says a lot. It would seem that they are banking on that one song selling the album. Unfortunately, even the version of 'Waiting' on the album is not as good as that on the SFU soundtrack.
Increasing the bass can thicken the album a little, as I have done on all but the first listen, but it is mosly bland forgettable pop. Lord-Alge produces some of the other album tracks (not the version of 'Waiting') but all of them seem to need a kick to be at all memorable. Some of the songs aren't bad but they fade into a mire of similar, forgettable fare - especially when held up against the near incandescent version of Waiting that led me to them. This album has gathered dust since the first few listens. Disappointing.

The Devlins from Ireland are a fantastic band. Peter and Colin Devlin are incredible writers and artists. Fresh sounding music like you have never heard before. All the Discs are fabulous. I reco all including their newest "Waves" is also a great disc. Check these guys out you won't be sorry. Hey HBO doesn't often get it wrong.
Also check out my bros Tammany Hall NYC. Peace Y'all ScottB

I bought "Drift," The Devlins' first album, while in college. I loved it nearly to death, but sort of forgot about it as it got buried in my CD collection. I pulled it out again not too long ago and thought, "These guys must have done something else by now..." Lo and behold, Amazon.com had "Waiting!" And, with no further waiting, I bought it!I have to say, it's not as instantly wonderful as "Drift," which I consider to be one of those rare albums without a single bad track... But "Waiting" is still pure Devlins, and still purely enjoyable. I adore their voices and their overall moodiness - both albums are great soundtracks for the rainy days we get here in the Pacific Northwest! I still have yet to see these guys live, but I'll keep a closer eye out for them now. So - if you're a fan, this is a must. And if you like this album, definitely seek out "Drift." And, according to their website, they're due to produce another CD soon. I don't plan to wait as long to buy that one.

Not what you expect from an opening band,

I too, like many, saw The Devlins open for Tori Amos, and being the huge Tori fan I was, I started talking and goffing around durring the Devlins' set. But when they started "Heaven's Wall", I was silenced. I coulden't belive the sound these guys had. and months after the show I went to store after store looking for "Waiting", and nobody had it till I went to England, and it was sitting there in the 2for1 bin. Rock on guys, you are great!
