Book Description

Waiting to Know You is a twisting tale of unconventional relationships. Brothers Dan and Lunt, abandoned as children and adopted into separate families, have never known their biological sister Virginia, who has been shunned by her parents because of her morbid obesity. Desperate for acceptance, Virginia seeks out her brothers, although she fears that revealing a shared family connection will end in rejection.

Meanwhile, Dan's life is already in turmoil when a former girlfriend informs him of the death of the teenage daughter he has never met. As Dan journeys across the United States trying to connect with lost family members, he has no idea that his sister is currently living as his neighbor.

Thanks to a generous divorce settlement, Lunt can afford a life of adventure and self-indulgence. On one wild road trip, he ends up rescuing two wives from a polygamist community. While this may have begun as just another crazy stunt, it sets him on course to meet a woman that will change everything he has believed about himself.

Amid the chaos of her brothers' lives, Virginia's quest for acceptance leads her to religion, drugs, and ultimately prostitution to find the basic human interaction she yearns for.

Both humorous and heartbreaking, Waiting to Know You by Karisha Kal‘ee‘ay is a beautifully written, strikingly accomplished debut novel.

Through a partnership with, Karisha has calculated her carbon footprint arising from energy usage, commuting, and business travel and has offset that by investing in’s third-party certified carbon reduction projects.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Read! August 26, 2010
Waiting to Know You is a complex and compelling story worth sitting down and devoting yourself too. There are none of the cookie cutter characters you seem to find in so many modern novels. You don't find a heroine that is gorgeous, and successful and just looking for the right man to really find bliss. Instead you travel through a complex network of individuals who drastically influence each others lives in ways unexpected. The dialog is so realistic you feel as though you are standing in front of the characters listening to them talk. They are confused, searching for purpose, searching for love. They may be different from me but I relate to their feelings and desires. Religion is intertwined though out their lives and gives depth to the characters. The two main religions described in the book, Mormonism and Utwlkjdf, act as foils to each other but at the same time show how a person can be shaped from their religious upbringing. The story also explores illegal drug use, polygamy, nature vs. nurture, infidelity and many other themes that are both relate-able and relevant. Karisha Kal'ee'ay's writing gives life to the numerous locations used in the story. Prostitution was brought up, almost casually, in a way that I had never considered before, a morbidly obese woman performing fellatio for money because she was physically incapable of nearly every form of "normal" occupation. The humiliation that woman, Virginia, bore made me feel horribly sympathetic and guilty at the same time. As the characters interact with Virginia it reveals the deepest parts of their personality that wouldn't be shown in their deals with the majority of other people. Read more ›

5.0 out of 5 stars Read several times and gifted it January 20, 2011
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
This story is well written with fantastic character development. Their sometimes dysfunctional lives are in peril mixed with sexual and religious confusion which I related to as I was born and raised in the mormon church explored here which still has tremendous impact on my now estranged family. There are many similarities to these lives and those that I have experience with and I related to the rebellious and impulsive nature of one of the brothers and his sexual adventures. It is very entertaining and interesting with insight into how complicated as well as tragic life can be. I look forward to new books from this talented author. She could develop screen plays for TV or movies.

3.0 out of 5 stars People who read this... April 18, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I'm sorry to tell you this but I couldn't really get into the heart of this book... took book off my kindle almost half way through. Sometimes I feel a book should have you interested in the first two chapters. Maybe this wasn't my kind of book...a little dark? But it was free to download. I'm thankful for having the chance to read a different author...

Yikes, couldn't even bother to turn another page of this book. Flow was off and characters were not worth getting to know. Please try again, but use an honest, experienced editor.
