This review is from: Waiting For Lucinda: One Family's Journey Through International Adoption (Paperback)
In _Waiting for Lucinda_, Amy Shore uses a series of short chapters to string together her sometimes frustrating but ultimately joy-filled adoption journey. Although I would definitely classify this as a light read, perhaps that's not such a bad thing, especially considering the heavy topic of adoption. Written in 2003-2004, the information about the specifics of the Guatemalan adoption experience is accurate (my husband and I are currently in the process of adopting a baby from Guatemala as well), complete (Ms. Shore begins at the point where her family decided to adopt and ends after her daughter has been home for several months) and sprinkled with personal and touching information about her immediate and extended family. I especially appreciated Ms. Shore's perspective on telling yet another well-meaning person that there is no news during the extended wait for their daughter--and I had to smile when she mentioned her dentist on page 92: "I cringe when I see on the calendar that my six-month dental appointment is nearing. The friendly dental receptionist looked shocked the *last* time I was in without a baby in my arms!" Anyone who is in the process of adoption understands how the simplest routines can turn into just another ugly milestone of exactly how long the wait has been.
I am thankful that Ms. Shore shared her journey on paper for those who come through the process next. _Waiting for Lucinda_ was a treat to read, and I suspect I'll turn to it again the next time I have a question about the process.

This is a great book for those looking into or in the process of an adoption from Guatemala. I read the book through in two days while completing our dossier paper work. The book was enjoyeable and I was glad the writer chose to include some photos. This isn't a "how-to" book, but a nice story of one families journey. I enjoyed it thoroughly.

My husband and I are in the process of adopting a baby boy from Guatemala. I was so excited to find a book about the international adoption process, specifically tailored to Guatemala! I started reading this book two days ago, and I haven't been able to put it down. Amy provides heartwarming stories, as well as the reality of the process in Guatemala. Thank you, Amy, for sharing your story with us!
