Book Description

Nick and the boys return from the summer's last hunting trip to find the streets empty, the beachfront and park abandoned, and the windows of their own homes boarded shut. The hunters have become the hunted, in an apocalyptic plague that pits man against beast--very tiny beasts. And Nick is determined to keep his strength, courage and family alive during what could very well be the last winter of their lives.

Editorial Reviews

...Packs a huge punch that belies its size ...worthy of mention are Owen's skill at toying with reader expectations and the unyielding tension throughout the story from the first sentence to the very last. --Shroud Magazine Book Reviews amazing story  ...this has become one of my favorites.  It's suspenseful, creepy and very descriptive.  If you're looking for a fun read that leaves you feeling a little uneasy, I highly recommend Waiting Out Winter. --The Crow's Caw

Owen uses the [claustrophobic apocalypse survival tale] to produce a taut, tense, and often sad tale of loss and desperation... that will both haunt and break your heart.  I can't recommend it enough.

I had the opportunity to meet Kelli Owen recently at the World Horror Horror Convention in Austin, TX. Very engaging individual and you can totally sense her excitement as an author. As Brian Keene told me at WHC . . . "Make sure you get as many signed items by Kelli as we you can because she is the next star on the Horror horizon." I took his advice to heart and did just that. Back to Waiting Out Winter; my first exposure to Kelli Owen's writing talents. In a few words, brillant and scary! Without getting too much into the plot, beware of biting black flies since they carry a rare and new disease to end mankind. Very original storyline with believable characters you care about. So hang up your Shell no-pest strips and be prepared to enter the fly ridden world of Waiting Out Winter!

WAITING OUT WINTER, a small, slender volume from Thunderstorm Books' Elemental chapbook series, packs a huge punch that belies its size and is more deserving of your time than some books three times its size and two-thirds the price.

Nick and his hunting buddies come home from a couple weeks in the woods to find themselves immediately neck-deep in an apocalyptic situation created by the local government's inept and little-too-late response to a pest problem. The result is a town, and possibly greater surrounding area, under siege from a most-unexpected front.

WINTER's length makes it difficult to discuss in-depth without giving too much away, but two things definitely worthy of mention are Owen's skill at toying with reader expectations and the unyielding tension throughout the story from the first sentence to the very last.

5.0 out of 5 stars I enjoyed this book! March 25, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I thought this novella was an excellent and interesting read! Imagine going on a trip with a couple of friends and coming home to find that everything has changed. There is no power, no radio signals and everyone is barricaded inside their homes. The author does a VERY good job of describing what it would be like to find ourselves in such a situation. The boredom and monotony, as well as the terror and constant knowledge that you must never let down your guard because not only does your very life depend on it but your children's lives as well. "Getting groceries" takes on a whole new meaning when it means risking your life to leave the house and foraging in the homes of dead people. What makes this book so terrifying is the possibility that it could really happen! It's a thought provoking read!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Apocalyptic Destruction On A Small Scale February 20, 2012
Format:Perfect Paperback

Kelli Owen is one of those new writers that really deserve all the acclaim she is garnering. "Waiting Out Winter" is a beautifully painted landscape of apocalyptic destruction on a small scale. Her concept of transmission and contagion feels all too real and I kept shaking my head while reading it, knowing how easy this fiction could become America's reality some day.

Situations and relationships continue to build as author Owen throws curve balls and unique scenarios that keep you on your feet. While I wouldn't categorize this as straight horror, I would say that it is a dark drama with elements of horror, but fans of both genres will appreciate the mature and sensitive handling of the material.

One of my favorite scenes - without giving anything away - is a simple non-verbal moment between to strangers that have something very powerful in common. Owen writes, "Neither man ever said a word, but as anxiety shifted their weight from foot to foot they had managed to gradually move from standing across from each other to standing next to each other." A tender and subtle scene that Owen really nailed.

Three or four typos aside, this was one of the better novellas I've read in a long time. I look forward to Owen's longer, novel-length work in the near future.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gripping, Believable, New opinion of flies! January 16, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Ms. Owen is a very talented author. She pulls you into the story with ease and makes you care about the characters and the plot very quickly. She takes something so realistic and makes it so believable you will view flies differently!! The story was paced very well and when it was over, I didn't want it to be. I cannot wait for Ms. Owen's next talent to be released.
She is a gem and if you have the privilege of meeting her, consider yourself a lucky individual.

Kelli Owen has her own unique voice within the realm of horror fiction, and Waiting Out Winter resonates with it. She looks at things a little differently, as showcased in this short end-of-the-world story. While Apocalyptic tales are nothing new, her angle on it was very refreshing. Given the shorter format of this story, she successfully meets the challenge of drawing the reader into the horrific world the characters are living in - if you can call it "living" - as they try to survive, her tiny antagonists breed fear and loathing in the imagination, and her protagonists are worthy of our empathy and hope for their survival. She even manages to sneak in a cautionary commentary on trending societal indifference during an emotional scene in the middle of a neighborhood street. The story moved along at a nice pace, and was over before I was ready for it to be. It left me wanting more from Ms Owen, and I can't wait to see what she does next!!

More About the Author

Kelli Owen was born in Superior, WI (1969-) and currently lives in Destination, PA. She has been writing for as long as she can remember. Her first novel, SIX DAYS, was met with nothing but praise. Her shorter fiction tends to lean toward horror, her longer works toward thriller, but neither genre was expecting this tomboy to write quite like she does. Before publishing her own works she edited for many of the authors in her field, reviewed the others, and was asked to be on countless panels regarding the craft and genres, where she honed her skills before setting any of her own work loose on the unsuspecting public.

From the author:
Why do I write? Because I had amazing teachers, especially Mrs. Honz and Mr. Leighty, who told my mom it was okay that I was reading horrible things--because I was READING--and encouraged my writing with red pens and raised eyebrows over the top of their glasses.

Why do I publish? Because somewhere along the way I found out it was okay to make things up--to lie to all of you lovely people. I get to create my own places and people, and convince you they are real for a couple hundred pages... And that's pretty amazing.

Benjamin Franklin said, "Either write something worth reading or do something worth writing." I'm leaning towards the first choice. Care to read along?

Stop by any of them and say hi...
