4.0 out of 5 stars Solid Debut from some talented artists, March 9, 2005
This review is from: Waiting Room (Audio CD)
Aloe Blacc & Exile? They come together and create Emanon. I don't now too much about them but they dropped a pretty good debut album with "The Waiting Room." Most of the beats are raw and organic but scaled down. Not a lot of layers just some tight keys and a drum beat, maybe some strings or a vocal sample thrown in. Now this may sound simplistic but in a day and age when a lot of indy folks are creating massively complex beats this is a likeable change. Aloe is the Emcee & Singer and Exile is the beat creator. Aloe is a tight emcee who drops knowledge on tracks like "Politician" and "Six Million Ways." He also has a voice that beats most of today's R&B singers, and he just does it for fun. Exile is a producer in the vein of Premo but with a modern day feel to his style. Two of the tracks (The World Don't Sing & A Story) fall flat for me. While "The World Don't Sing" makes since in context with the track that follows (Politician), it is just feels out of place. "A Story" might be just that but the combination of the beat and Aloe's flow just ruins it for me. For a debut full length this album shows promise for these two up and comers and it is definitely good enough to make you want to check out their back catalog and any future releases.

5.0 out of 5 stars CLASSIC, November 4, 2008
This review is from: Waiting Room (Audio CD)
This album is one of my favorites. Blu & Exile are a dynamic duo, and I can certainly say the same about Aloe Blacc & Exile. The production is incredible. It is pretty laid back in my opinion. The lyrics, of course are also dope.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great album, March 23, 2005

Very good album. The album is unique and the beats seem pretty soulful and traditional. It reminds me of the earlier The Roots albums. If you're into soulful, mellow, mid 90's style beats this is for you. There is none of that Def Jux, El-P type tech hip-hop in here. This is pure, unadulterated, hip-hop and it is evident from the first song you will hear to the last.

My favorite tracks are "The World Don't Sing" and "Pseudo".

Emanon gives it to you all 25 tracks. Innovation, creative, out of the box, realistic, and on point! I am definately feeling this duo, they are truly revolutionaries. Pseudo and Politician are just two examples of their style of neo hip hop soul. This joint just never seems to end and keeps your attention with freshness. If you are looking for something different without goin' off on the deep end the Emanon is the one to keep it relevant.

4.0 out of 5 stars certainly not the first, hopefully not the last, August 30, 2006
This review is from: Waiting Room (Audio CD)
Very strong in the realm of beats - this is much more melodic than Emanon's previous work. Yes. Previous work. To check out their other albums, you may want to start with Steps Through Time for a compilation of their underground hip hop years that will inspire you beyond words. You may have to dig for it.

Sure the production is better on this album, but I feel a lot of the emceeing and the lyrics lose the gripping power of Emanon's work from the late 90's. I'd give it a 5 in relationship to most other hip hop out there these days, but my expectations for Emanon are sky-high.

Always conscious, intelligent, clever, talented, and poignant, Emanon still ranks somewhere at the top as far as underground hip hop artists are concerned.

Emanon (DJ Exile And Aloe Blacc) out of Southern California released a solid debut album, The Waiting Room. The lyrical content is beyond on point and beats are melodic and infectious. Emanon have a unique style and Aloe Blacc truely posses above average MIC skills, he can sing, MC and speak spoken word. I can enjoy The Waiting Room from beginning to end. The tracks that stand out are the opening song...

Count Your Blessing (nice track and sample of Sister Nancy's track Bam Bam)
The Word (nice lyrics, chorus)
More Than You Know (a favorite with a nice instrumental outro)
Pseudo (another favorite and it pretty much sums up the mainstream rap game today...Wack!! Nice beat, chorus)
Make Music, Politician (lyrical content on point)
The Waiting Room (nice beat, tight flows)
Four Square (nice beat)
A Story (Emanon's lyrical Bio)
Ahh Ouai (my favorite track)
Six Million Way (DJ Exile shines solo, bomb a** track, another favorite)
She Thinks (Aloe Blacc shows his vocal skills, tite track)
Farewell (ends the CD off nicely by way of a tight track and lyrics once again).

I really recommend picking this album up, it's true underground hip-hop @ it's finest.
This album also truely showcases Emanon's skills with no guest appearances.
You will not be dissappointed, if you enjoy Little Brother, A Tribe Called Quest or Slum Village!

Support and enjoy!
