Britta Johnson (video director for Andrew Bird, among others) brings Lusines gorgeous new single Two Dots to life, illustrating the songs relationships-as-trigonometry analogy in an intricately animated video.

Biography

Jeff McIlwain has been producing his visceral, melodic strain of abstract electronic music as Lusine for 10 years now. Originally a Texas native, Jeff attended CalArts in 1998, studying 20th-century electronic music and sound design for music and film. Soon after, he met Shad Scott and put out his self-titled debut as Lusine for Isophlux. Since then, McIlwain relocated to Seattle and began ... Read more in Amazon's Lusine Store

Editorial Reviews

2013 release, the third full length from Seattle-based electronic pop & experimental electronic producer Jeff McIlwain AKA Lusine. As with all of his work as Lusine, this is a release characterized by diversity and coherency. It's an album that's both cerebral and visceral, a record that's both rewarding of a serious headphone session and also warm and melodic enough to make listening as engaging in an emotional sense as it is in an intellectual one. Features vocals from Sarah McIlwain.

...what am I saying, the classic Lusine method is ALL ABOUT surprises. There isn't a single album in his discography that isn't filled with impossibly deep grooves with countless layers of hazy melodics, taking you down side streets you never thought existed yet finding yourself right at home. In a few words, it's all good, all the way back 14+ years to the very beginning of this incredible musical trip that is Lusine.

So what about The Waiting Room? Instrumental fiends will replay tracks like Panoramic and February until every hook is internalized, and those who liked the brief smattering of vocal appearances on A Certain Distance will get more than they bargained for. Fully five of the ten tracks have full-scale vocals, ranging from the old school synth pop of Get the Message to the wildly ethereal Lucky. No two tracks go the same route, but Lusine has been at this long enough to know how to weave this all together without sounding like the vinyl-equivalent of Frankenstein.

In short it's all a crazy head trip, organized carefully so you can pack your things and go, letting Lusine give you a five star tour of every aspect of his unique and complex sound. And while I am excited just to have this release, I'm really hoping for another singles bender followed by a double-disc compilation (a la Lucky Numbers). I'll keep my fingers crossed while keeping The Waiting Room on the short list of repeat listens. It's the best release of 2013 yet, and while there are many months to go it's going to be hard to top this one.

I don't have a particularly elegant review to give or anything, but I just had to say there are very few albums that I enjoy listening to all the way through multiple times without getting "bored" or skipping tracks, and this is one of them. It's a great mellow electronic album with a diverse sound. Really glad I decided to get it after hearing By This Sound on a local college station.

Who could be surprised that Lusine would, once again, release such a superb album. Brilliant texture, tone, layers, and ingenuity. Lusine saved electronic music for me.
