3.0 out of 5 stars A Good start but it lacks
In my opinion, this is Thursday's worst CD. Full Collapse and War All the Time are much better, yet this album still has a few of their best songs.

Porcelain (2/5)- I'm sorry but I really don't like this song. It has some good qualities but when it hits "The silent line of sky-lit eyes" part, it's so whiny I wanna throw up.

by now you have probably heard the band thursday, who are from the flourishing new jersey scene. they're one of the many fresh new faces to rise with the whole "emo explosion" *rolls eyes* but not ALL of the band who are being tagged with the label "emo" are bad. for the purists, much of the mainstream bands are disregarded and left to the MTV crowd to eat up and call their own. it's considered "not cool" to like a band that has appeared in a mag, is on the radio or tv. PUT ALL THAT BEHIND YOU.

i would probably describe this album, and thursday, as melodic post-hardcore. one of the first things i noticed about this album is it is lyrically influenced by the band joy division (see the track ian curtis) which is a favorite of singer/songwriter geoff rickly. the style on this album differs from full collapse. for one it is more lo-fi sounding and not quite as heavy but equally amazing. keep in mind that the members were still learning their instruments during 'waiting' but this is a good album to document the tremendous amount of growth between the two records. i can't wait to see what they put out next.

one cannot deny that amidst all the generic trendy screamo/pop-punk bands thursday have the greatest, most thought provoking, lyrics of them all. probably my favorite track is 'where the circle ends'. who would of known a song with spoken words put to a mellow melody could possibly be that powerful? in addition to the wonderfully crafted poetic-like lyrics i also enjoy the music technique they use where they draw the listener in by slowly building the suspense until the song just explodes into a million pieces accompanied by painful shrieks and wails in the background. but this style is more so seem throughout full collapse. in my opinion, the most notable tracks are porcelain, this side of brightness, streaks in the sky, and where the circle ends.

studio record is one thing, live show is another. the energy and power of thursday is very much captured in thursday's live show. so buy this record, learn the lyrics, go see thursday, rock out.

Thursday is what you call a band.

In my opinion, "Waiting" is just as good as "Full Collapse." I love to hear where a band got it's sound from.

"Waiting" is filled with more post-hardcore sounds, and not as many screams as "Full Collapse." If the background screams turned you off of their second cd, you might want to check this one out. Some highlights of the cd are "Porecelain", "This Side of Brightness" (which you can download off of their MP3.com website), and "Dying in New Brunswick." Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars How can you hate thursday?, June 19, 2005

yea, so i bought their other cds and i thought they were amazing. A lot of kids call thursday posers. How can they be a poser band? They pretty much pioneered this type of music. This album was revoltuionary to the whole New Jersey scence as well as the whole screamo/punk scene in general. This album actually shows screaming as a viable music form. this album was recorded raw-nothing fancy. if you like all the fancy studio stuff, chances are you are just another poser trying to be in the scene. this album is how music should be made:recorded-not produced. The only thing that needs work is Geoffs voice, which has improved on their other albums. To be honest I cant wait until thursday's next cd. If you hate thursday then you must hate music in general.

4.0 out of 5 stars Waiting, May 16, 2004
This review is from: Waiting (Audio CD)
Porcelain -(5/5)- This song is very good, it took a few listens for me to really appreciate it. But I love the chorus and the vocals. The lyrics can really hit home too.
"When people die, they take a piece of us with them."

This Side of Brightness -(3/5)- This song is good, but I've just never fell in love with it yet, maybe I need to listen to it a few more times. It's just a good song, nothing that special happens.

Ian Curtis -(5/5)- I love this song. It's a little bit different than the other songs on the album, slighly more poppy I guess. The lyrics are deep and the ending is really cool.

Introduction -(no need for rating)- Just a nice introduction to the next song.

Streaks in the Sky -(5/5)- This is my favorite song on the CD. I love the sounds of the guitars with the drums and vocals. The chorus is really awesome.

In Transmission -(5/5)- This song starts off softer and then builds into a harder sound and slows back down. This is what I love about Thursday, they're so unpredictable.

Dying in New Brunswick -(4/5)- This is overall a great song, but it's nothing new to what's already been on the CD. And it is very similar to In Transmission, which is a better song.

Dotted Line -(4/5)- Again, nothing that special about this song, but it is still amazing.

Where the Circle Ends -(5/5)- A soft song where Geoff speaks the lyrics, I love this song and the lyrics are great.

Some people who maybe have only heard War All the Time or Full Collapse may not like this CD as much because it's not as well produced, ect. Or if you're a first time listener to Thursday this may not seem that great, I would recommend picking up Full Collapse or War All the Time first. However, this is a great album and after a few listens you'll fall in love with it. I'd highly recommend picking it up.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not the best, yet...., August 28, 2005
This review is from: Waiting (Audio CD)
Still a very good album. "Waiting" is a perfect example of what Thursday has the potential to do. This album illustrates how good Thursday can be, and is even more obvious after listening to War All the Time and Full Collapse. The album starts off with a song called Porcelain, and right from the beginning these guys set the stage for a good album. Porcelain starts up this band which is, even in this album, not filled with whining and crying about girls, and this trend is continued throughout the next albums. I would rate the songs of this album as followed:

Porcelain: 9/10 Nice introduction.
This Side of Brightness: 9/10 Geoff shows off softer vocals.
Ian Curtis: 9/10 Maybe the most scremo song on the album.
Introduction: Instrumentals.
Streaks in the Sky:9/10 Nice song after some instrumentals.
In Transmission: 8/10 Some pretty cool guitar parts.
Dying in New Brunswick: 9/10 Geoff mixes screaming with casual singing
Dotted Line: 8/10 Not my favorite song on the album.
Where the Circle Ends: 10/10 For some strange reason, this is my favorite song on this album, even though Geoff is not singing, but talking over some catchy instrumentals.

Overall though, this is a great album. I enjoyed this album just as much as any other CD that I have ever listened to, and, in truth, I say this ranks closer to 4.5 stars rather than 4.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brillaint!, December 31, 2004
This review is from: Waiting (Audio CD)
The early work of the amazing band known as Thursday. As far as I know, Thursday is the closest thing to a popular band that actually has good lyrics. No cheesy breakup songs, no catcy hooks that are great for a week and then cause you to throw the CD out. Thursday is the only band that I've ever listened too for more than a week. Its odd how they occasionally get grouped with bands such as Taking Back Sunday, New Found Glory and other catchy for a week trash. This CD is as brilliant as any Thursday album to date. All are quite different though so I cant really compare.
Lines like:
"deaths up there shine more brightly than lives down here"
"you stripped away the street signs and shot out the stop lights. If yo smashed away the buildings, what would you have left?"
"It's hard to dream if you're a ghost."
"t's the turning clock that happens every night and if we don't stop soon,
we will never wake up again. Computers lie. They keep us in our lives."
Streaks in the Sky is the best song ever written. If Geoff sings(screams maby) "Portrait of a man who stayed, His face is folded up and grayed, But there's something in his eyes that tells me this is the life for me." and you dont get a shiver down your spine, you will never like thursday.
Amazing that he was once known as "Tone Geoff," as his singing in that bit is the best 10 seconds of sound ever created.

4.0 out of 5 stars A very solid first album, May 24, 2004

My friend is really into this band, but I wasn't that interested till I looked at their musical influences. I thought they had some good ones, so I decided to give them a chance. I really like this release. I've heard Full Collapse, Five Stories Falling, and War All The Time as well, and this album is my favorite out of all of them. Geoff is a very talented lyricist, and while the band can sound a bit same-y at times, I think overall, they're a talented band worth looking into, and I'd recommend this album.

Oh, and this is for a previous reviewer, Brandon from Nashville, TN USA: I don't know where you got your supposed information from, but Ian Curtis was the vocalist of highly influential post punk band Joy Division, whom committed suicide in 1980. Just clearing up any confusion.

4.0 out of 5 stars My heart strings unwind, September 18, 2003
This review is from: Waiting (Audio CD)
*let it be noted that I give the 4 only because of production...or should I say lack of production.

I don't think many people know this album exists. Waiting was released on the excellent eyeball records label (which is still in business and still releasing amazing stuff, see Murder by Death, wow!!!!!) a while back, I don't even remember the exact year. I picked this up after falling in love with Full Colapse, and I must say I was dissapointed upon first listen. The production was below par, and it just caused the music to sound of less quality after I had been so used to the amazing unbeatable Full Colapse. But time wore on, and I eventually went back again and again. Finally the beauty of this album got to me. This is a softer Thursday, and is not Full Colapse, or even close to it. This is an album written by a new young band trying to find their sound. It's varied, all over the place, and has poor production. And you won't believe me, but it's amazing. Definatly an acuired taste is this album, but once you've acuired that taste, you'll keep going back for more.

4.0 out of 5 stars take one at something new, July 15, 2005
This review is from: Waiting (Audio CD)
to fully understand what is going on with thursday's music, you need to know a little bit about music and independent music history. to cal thursday wiggers who cant play guitar is foolish. thursday's influences are the most important part of what they are doing. they allude to early "emo" bands such as mineral, you and i, and rites of spring. the song ian curtis is about the band joy division's memeber who commited suicide and who has been part of one of the most influential bands in modern rock, up there with the pixies and nirvana. This album was not recorded or produced to sound like a pop record, which is how many of these new post-hardcore/metal/pop rock like avanged sevenfold, from autumn to ashes, ect. All of these bands carry scenester pretenses and are the bands who are influenced by thursday. to say that these bands are smarter, more musically inclined, and simply better is laughable. all that they are is overproduced and accesable for someone who doesn't put thought into what they are listening to, but is just waiting for a breakdown so that they can jump in the pit. thursday is pioneering something new, experimenting with genres of music such as indie, hardcore, pop and classic rock to make something that has many layers and probably wont be fully understood the first time you listen to it. and as for geoff's lyrical stylings: Im almost positive that he recorded these songs all in the first take. they did not polish his voice or use pitch correction. it is meant to sound rough and raw, that is the kind of emotion that is trying to be expressed. their sound and thoughts and feelings are complex and human, much like the crowd that they are trying to reach.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent first album, December 20, 2005
This review is from: Waiting (Audio CD)
I wouldn't give this album a full 5 stars, more like 4.5. I actually bought Full Collapse and War All The Time before I bought this album, so it has been interesting to hear the beginning after the middle. I love the roughness and rawness of this record in its production, and I would highly recommend it to any Thursday fan who doesn't have it yet. Can't wait for their new album!
