I bought this movie 'cause Gale Harold's in it. He is a beautiful man, a wonderful actor, and I was looking forward to seeing him in a different kind of role from his "Queer as Folk" persona.
And, indeed, different he was. And very, very good, too; the best thing about this movie. But that, I'm afraid, is not saying a whole hell of a lot. "Wake" is slow, monotonous, pedestrian and pointless. All the characters are unlikeable and uninteresting; their dialogue is stilted and insufferable, their relationships forced and farcical. Admittedly, I hate a movie that begins as a story, years in the future with an older version of the main character reminiscing wistfully (often with a typewriter click-clacking away, as they pen their Great American Novel, complete with the requisite autobiographical voice-over). There are notable exceptions to this rule, but by and large, I like a story to begin at the beginning. In the case of "Wake", however, I wish it hadn't begun at all. I wonder if this is a gender thing. Like, almost every guy I know loves "The Shawshank Redemption" with a burning passion, and most women I know can take it or leave it. Maybe the brothers of this dysfunctional family resonate somewhere in the masculine breast.... I hated all of them, and couldn't wait for my torment to end. In short, "Wake" is all kinds of wrong, and I heartily recommend avoiding it if at all possible. (Which, actually, shouldn't be too hard. Just don't buy it!) Gale Harold, though: a very beautiful man.
