5.0 out of 5 stars Author's Insight, October 17, 2001

This review is from: In the Wake of Galleons (Hardcover)
I wrote this autobiographical book as a result of a lifetime of work locating and shipwrecks and sunken cities in over 60 countries around the world and decided to share my adventures with the readers of this book. It started with my building a home-made diving helmet at the age of l2 and almost getting killed using it, to my first discovery of gold at the age of l5 on a California Gold Rush ship and then on to hundreds of other old shipwrecks dating between l000 BC up to modern day shipwrecks.

My most recent discovery was that of one of Magellan's ships lost in l522 off Borneo. Not only does the reader experience the jubliations of my discovery of countless treasures, but also the hardships such as attacks by modern-day pirates and sharks, treasures found and then lost to unscrupulous governments and being captured by terrorists in Lebanon while working on a Phoencian shipwreck. I hope the reader gets as much enjoyment from this book as I have from living the kind of life that most people would enjoy having done. Robert F. Marx

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Great Book, November 7, 2001

This review is from: In the Wake of Galleons (Hardcover)
Another well written book by Robert Marx. Lots of treasure history and adventure. It's always a pleasure to read one of his books. If you are a maritime archeologist fan you will enjoy reading this story. Mr. Marx seems to have a sixth sense about treasure. He has a way of taking tedious daily events and turning them into real adventure. Very interesting reading, I found it hard to put the book down.

5.0 out of 5 stars Is this guy for Real !, February 14, 2003
This review is from: In the Wake of Galleons (Hardcover)
I gotta say that I could not put this book down. Bob Marx has to be a real life modern adventure pirate(without the killing and dishonest staff). He has done more in and for maritime history that most academics could only read about. From all points of the compass this man has been there and done that and lived (only just) to write about it. Can wait for the next book Bob !

4.0 out of 5 stars Great writing, from a long time R. Marx reader, October 29, 2008

This review is from: In the Wake of Galleons (Hardcover)
First let me say I have read Robert Marx's books, since he and Clay Blair did "Diving for Pleasure and Treasure" way back there when it first came out. I still have that book on my shelf as one of my all time favorites. Marx does an outstanding job in the writing of this book, however I do have a couple of complaints. Number one as a "hardcover" book, I expect all hardcover books of this price bracket to have a formal "dustjacket", this book does not (call me old fashioned). Second, all the photos in the book are black and white, and there are many photos. All being black and white is not a problem if they are quality photos....many of these photos are not quality. Examples, page 160 of Taffi Fisher the photo looks like it was made through a fogged lens. Page 157 the photo of Mel Fisher literally has a fog around the man that extends out one eigth of an inch, the photo looks like it was taken thru wax paper. Some photos are crisp and clear, example page 127, clear and crisp. More foggy photos page 344, 350 and page 372 are foggy again. I don't know if this was a problem with the book printer (Best Publishing in Arizona) or with the original photographs. Marx is a great adventurer, explorer, historian, ex-marine and writer. I believe some of Clay Blair's(God rest his soul) great writing rubbed off on Bob during their time together. I would recommend this book to others interested in archaeology, ship wrecks and treasure diving.

I would have rated this book a ten, but Amazon didn't offer that selection. This is easily the best real life adventure book I've ever read. I've recommended it to friends and family as a must read.

Sitting in the recliner reading "In The Wake Of galleons" I'm transported to the life of adventure lived by the few and dreamed about by the many. You know who you are by the longing in your soul and the empty place in your heart that can only be filled by the ocean. This book reminds us all that life is in the living.

I just discovered this book by my old friend Bob Marx. I thought I knew lots about him, but this was a revelation. What an interesting and delightful book. I highly recommend it...even for those not fortunate to know the author personally!
