Book Description

January 3, 1998 1 and upHarper Growing Tree
HarperCollins Children's Books is delighted to introduce Harper Growing Tree, a new line of quality books for babies and toddlers, from birth to three years. In the tradition of Goodnight Moon, and The Runaway Bunny, these books offer literature for the youngest child, language-rich stories, songs, and poems, paired with beautiful accessible art. Studies have shown that the first three years of life are the most active period of language development. Babies respond immediately to rhythm, rhyme and repetition. Toddlers love stories and verse and music. The beginning and end of each day are celebrated in this engaging, flip-around picture book. The first half of the book is an exuberant invitation to greet the new day; turn the book over to share the day's end in gentle, soothing verse.

Editorial Reviews

From Kirkus Reviews

In another recycling of Zolotow's past works (see review, above), this new version of a 1971 title that was illustrated by Leonard Weisgard takes a circular approach. Paparone follows the awakening of young animals (in children's clothes) to a day of sunshine and play. A flip of the book (so it reads from back to front) prepares them and readers for sleep; ``trees whisper/the birds are still'' in a comfortably contemporary setting, where a dinosaur mobile hangs from the ceiling. The morning colors are citrus bright and energetic, while the night scenes appear in hushed shades of indigo. A pleasing edition: The book's rotations mimic those of day and night in a way that toddlers will comprehend. (Picture book. 1-6) -- Copyright ©1998, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

5.0 out of 5 stars The perfect book for bedtime!, April 23, 2003

My daughter just turned two and this is her favorite night-night book (as she calls it). Toddlers thrive on routine and this is great book to incorporate into your evening. We read other books first and this is the last one we use to wind down for the night. She likes to say goodnight to all of the animals and objects (especially the ladder)! The wakeup portion of the book is great also. I highly recommend this one!

5.0 out of 5 stars Good book for setting morning and night routine, February 27, 2001

My son is 19 months old and I have been reading him this book ever since he was 3 months old. When he awakes; first thing in the morning we read "Wake Up". I usually exaggerate the part in the book where "trees are singing, birds are winging, THINGS ARE THINGING!!" He looks forward to that part and bursts out laughing each time. At night, before going to bed, we read "Good Night". I usually read it in quiet tones and it sets the mood for settling down for the evening. Both stories are short and cater to the short attention span of little ones. I highly recommend it (them?)
