Book Description

February 16, 2011

Studies show that seven out of ten women, ages fifteen to sixty, avoid meeting friends, exercising, voicing an opinion, attending school, going to work, dating, or seeking medical attention because they don't like the way they look. This waste of time and talent is becoming increasingly detrimental to our own health and welfare and to the welfare of our daughters, granddaughters, and other women around the world.

In Wake Up, American Women, author Andrea Riggs shows how women are conditioned and tethered to old beliefs that tell them their personal value is based on appearance. She explores five myths threatening women's health and sanity that revolve around body image, desirability, the curse of aging, power, and competition. She provides practical solutions and tools for dealing with problems to help women transform their lives.

Riggs invites us to examine what we are unconsciously allowing to happen to women in this country, and she demonstrates that we must step into a new paradigm and shift our perspective. Wake Up, American Women communicates that we must dream big dreams and make a commitment to ourselves, our health, and our freedom.

WAKE UP American Women can help many American women achieve the true legacy they were meant to inherit. The five myths Riggs examines in this book have diluted this legacy.

Andrea Riggs takes the reader to the origin of these destructive myths. Then she gives pathways out of their destructive influence. This is a good book for women of any age. Women over 30 will have experienced all the myths first hand; girls, and younger women, will see how some of these myths are already beginning to affect their choices. Whether you are learning about what is happening before or after the fact, revealing the effects of these myths will help every woman understand that these beliefs are not your destiny . . . the myths can be overcome. These myths do not stand up to careful examination. When you understand how these myths are created and whom they serve, you begin to see options and discover new strategies to attain your deepest desires as a human.

The five myths Andrea Riggs explains and explores in Wake UP American Women will not surprise you. Riggs merely puts them in perspective for closer examination. How many of these myths have affected your life?

1. The Perfect Body = Acceptability
2. The Strong Knight = Desirability
3. The Curse of Aging = Doom
4. The Treasure Chest = Power
5. Other Women = Competition

Andrea Riggs shows the reader that the true legacy of American Women is greater than any of these myths will allow. She recalls the heroic females who paved the way for herself and every American woman. In particular, Andrea recalls the sacrifices of women such as Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton. These heroic figures would be disgusted with the power of these myths. These myths go against the path these courageous women opened one-hundred years ago. Accepting these myths diminishes the legacy they intended for American women.

You bring up wonderful points to help women feel empowered! I was so happy to see you include the Emotional Freedom Technique of tapping. I was introduced to it a year ago, and have found it very helpful and useful. Women need to have access to these things to help us handle the challenges of life. Your book reads quickly and easily and is very well done.

I am loving this book...it's very well written. I am impressed with the
depth of understanding about women and their challenges that it depicts.
It includes some history about the very brave women who came before us
and how we are reaping so much from their contributions.
I especially like how the author gives you ideas for change and growth
and practical ways to bring this about. It's an important book for women
of all ages and will help them see things in a new light.
