Probably Gary's Best Work!,
By givemerock (Plainfield, IL United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Wake Up Call (Audio CD)
Outside of Joe Satriani and Steve Morse you won't find amore talented instramental guitarist than Gary Hoey! Gary may not get as much "acclaim" as Joe, but he should. Gary's been putting out great instramental work since the late 80's! One area that Gary may have an edge over others instramental artists is his song writing. It's not blistering guitar work just for the sake of it. This is good music begining to end. And when Gary takes the vocal reigns on a few tracks you don't kringe. It just sounds right. On top of that I think Gary's one of the best at doing a cover tune. He does'nt copy it, he puts his stamp on it. If your new to Gary's work check out his "Greatest Hits" as well.

Your Wake Up Call...,
By Jay Squier (Palm Bay, FL United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Wake Up Call (Audio CD)
Gary does it again. I have Animal Instinct which is an awesome cd. It has been the only cd of his I've had for a long time, until I walk in Best Buy and "Hot Damn!"...they have a new one. I don't know how many cd's Gary has, but they are sure hard to come by where I live. This cd is as good (if not better) than Animal Instinct and a bit more rockin'.To start: My favorites are "Train Wreck", "Surf Alert" and "Electric Karma". They are instrumentals, first of all, and intense at that. About half of the cd (bonus tracks not included) have vocals and are very cool, but I don't buy Gary Hoey to hear him sing. Hoey does awesome covers of a few classics and makes them rock more than those who wrote them. "Drive" and "Hocus Pocus" are both from the Animal Instinct cd, so I would've prefered 2 I didn't already have, but...hey, they are very cool songs. "Linus & Lucy" remade is great! I didn't realize what it was at first...strangely familiar...and then it hit me and I had to laugh. This is (again) a great remake...never would've pictured myself cranking up the Charlie Brown theme song on my stereo. From the "Frankenstein" opener to the bonus tracks, this is an awesome cd and a must have if you are fan of great guitar work. At the same time, if you like this, you will love Animal Instinct.

If you never have purchased a Gary Hoey CD before, this is a great one to pick up for fans and guitar players. Gary plays with a great feel with the grace of a player who knows where he is going. Among the excelent compositions there are some wonderfull covers. This CD is perfect to crank up when your driving.
