5.0 out of 5 stars A new fan
I saw this on the internet and played the mp3s. They were greet. So I decided to buy it. I am so glad I did. I love this CD. I play iy over and over again. It is one of my favorites. She reminds me of Bonnie Rait and Sheryl Crow combined. It is the best new CD by a new artist out today.

2.0 out of 5 stars It's just not there.
She has an amazing voice and no one can take that away from her. She needs to work on her music writing however...an upbeat song on this CD would be a nice addition. This is not driving music by far. Her lastest single (not on this CD) "Everything But You" is a remarkable song and it shows how talanted she is and that she has a bright future if she can stay on...

5.0 out of 5 stars Wake Up! is a real treasure, December 19, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Wake Up! (Audio CD)
Susan Greenbaum's new CD is an exquisite tapestry of songs, emotions, and life. With a liquid and pure, clear voice that is remarkable in its range of styles and colors, her songs are rendered with the confident maturity that she has something to say from her artist's heart and can say it well. If the world will take time to listen, it will not be disappointed; nor will it be left unchanged. Susan Greenbaum's creative fire burns brighter, hotter, and purer than any other artist I've lately encountered. Her music has a rare texture that brings something new to the ear with each listening, and a familiarity that pulls the listener in time and again. Her songs tell stories with ease and grace, and all have quickly become favorites. It is a worthy followup to her first CD (also highly recommended). I for one sincerely hope that there is more to come from this talented lady.

5.0 out of 5 stars Susan Greenbaum is a Powerhouse!, June 30, 2000
This review is from: Wake Up! (Audio CD)
Everything you've heard is true! I've seen Susan perform live and I've bought the CD. I was knocked out by her range (octaves and genres!), passion and talent. In time Susan should be recognized as the peer of artists & bands like the Indigo Girls, Sheryl Crow, and Bonnie Raitt.

5.0 out of 5 stars Music Fan from Rare Old Times, March 20, 2000

This review is from: Wake Up! (Audio CD)
This is one of the best CDs I own, Her beautiful voice, melodic quality, dynamic range and intensity are unequalled and compelling. Her song writing ability compares with Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Joan Baez, and Joni Mitchell, but with more contemprary flare.

She has the ability to touch your heart and soul. Look out Sheryl Crow! This artist is the artist of the New Millemium!

Covering a range of Blues, Folk, Country, Pop and Jazz with a modern edge which appeals to all generations.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wake Up! Susan Greenbaum, December 8, 1999
By A Customer

Fantastic CD! Much like Lyle Lovett, Greenbaum covers a wide range of styles, from folk to gospel to country to pop. Strong vocals, musically interesting arrangements, and smart lyrics. Listening to Greenbaum, you get the sense that, unlike many pop stars, she has led a real life and has something to say.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wake Up! by Susan Greenbaum, December 6, 1999

Ms. Greenbaum's style is addictive -- this is one of the few CD's I own that I can put on repeat and listen to for hours. The songs do not become tedious and the more I listen to them, the more they become like old friends. Her songs are both uplifting and soothing, with the power to make you look inside yourself. I highly recommend this CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars refreshingly ordinary... and good!, April 2, 2002
This review is from: Wake Up! (Audio CD)
Refreshing! It's refreshing to hear a talented chick singer writing good tunes and performing them well, who seems to be a normal, down to earth individual.

There's no shortage of talented singer/songwriters putting out good material today. Many popular artists seem, however, to be different from ordinary folks like us. Tongue studs. Tatoos. Wild hair. Plastic clothes. P*ssed off attitudes. Depressive gloom. Victim angst.

Now here comes Susan Greenbaum, cranking out good song after good song without pretension, without hangups, and without nonsense. Here's a chick singer for those of us who have experienced life a while, and aren't impressed by put-on style without substance. Here is a talented gal writing good pop tunes with lyrics that grown ups can understand.

And probably relate to. Greenbaum avoids the artsy poet-speak that often makes for wonderful lyrical imagery, but leaves the listener wondering "what the heck is that song about?" Often I'd just as soon not know, as it would probably ruin the song for me. Not so with Susan. You can always understand the lyrics and often may have experienced something similar in your own life.

Greenbaum is appealing to those of us who have to work for a living, raise children, make house payments and deal with the good and bad realities of life. Soccer moms like Susan. So do scouting dads, working girls, thoughtful guys, and young folks not lined up at the latest Britney alter. Even grannies and children like Susan.

But don't get me wrong: Susan doesn't write candy fluff.

Susan produces the usual sorts of songwriter material --- songs of happiness, sadness, anger, elation, victory and defeat --- covering personal and social ground. Free of cliches. Well arranged tunes. Catchy hooks. Yet one gets the impression that regardless of a song's mood or style, it is sung by a gal that has a clear head on her shoulders, her feet on the ground, and finds the world to be a mostly agreeable place.

Greenbaum has a voice that stands alongside the best in popular music --- no exaggeration. The gal has a set of pipes that can go from low growl to high sweetness, twisting and bending the notes as desired along the way. Which is all the more amazing because if you ever see her live, you'll notice she's about as big as your pinky. She accompanies herself modestly on the guitar (usually acoustic), and is backed by a solid but understated trio that sits back and lets Susan be Susan.

Which, if you can catch her live, is where you'll see where the real Greenbaum appeal lies. Susan being Susan. This is where you'll get to see the bubbly Susan charm. And her ordinary wholesomeness. Yes, ordinary wholesomeness, a label most artists would shy away from, but one I suspect would make Susan proud. She's what you would sound like if you had a lot of musical talent and could work a microphone. Ordinary. Wholesome.

Refreshing!
