Our work schedules changed last fall, which unfortunately meant that my 3 year old son's sleep schedule changed from him being able to sleep as long as he wanted (7am) to having to get up between 6-6:30am 4 days a week. Naturally, his body clock adjusted and he began waking at 6am every morning. Well, okay, that's natural, my husband and I said to ourselves, so we adjusted his bedtime and just figured we would be getting up at 6 from now on. But then it became 5:45, and 5:30, and 5:00, and finally the straw that broke this camel's back was when my adorable little child was standing my bed saying, "Good morning, Mommy!" at 4:55am. I tried to put him back to bed but was unsuccessful (without him crying and much protest), so when I read the positive reviews about this owl, I decided to try it. Last night my husband called it, "the purchase of the year."
As soon as my son saw it, he loved it. I kept it in demo mode so that I could show him what it would look like when its face was green and it was okay to wake up and orange when it is still time for sleep. Later, I set it for 6:30am and when my son went to bed that night, I pushed the tummy button to make the orange face light up and the good-night music come on. He loved the music and loved the light-up face. The default music/light length of time is 5 minutes. You also have the option of 15 minutes or 30 minutes.
Next morning, he's awake at his usual 5am. I watch him in the video monitor and he grabs the owl and says, "Not yet!" He waits another 15 minutes or so and then comes into our room. I tell him it is too early to get up and ask if the owl's face is green yet. We go to look and I push the tummy button. The owl says, "It's not time to get up yet" and plays soothing music. My son gets back into bed and I tell him to wait for the face to turn green. He played quietly in his room until 6:30 and then came running into my room with the owl, whose face was now green, saying delightedly, "Mommy, Mommy! The owl's face is green! It's time to wake up now!"
Same story for the next 2 mornings except that he waits longer to come in. This morning, day 4, he did not come in until 6:30 when the owl's face was green. He was very excited and came in showing me the owl. I have no idea if he woke up first and played quietly until the face turned green, or if the face lighting up woke him up. I don't know because I WAS ASLEEP until his bedroom door opened! Hurray and hallelujah!
It is very easy to program and can be locked by pushing and holding specific buttons, so that if your kid opens the owl in the back, it can't be accidentally reset. My son hasn't bothered the Velcro opening though. The internal machinery can be removed so that the stuffed animal part of it can be washed in the washer. Yes, this thing is wash & dry! There is a nap timer as well if you need it. You can even adjust the brightness of the face.
The only downside is something another reviewer mentioned, the tummy button is difficult to find. My son hasn't figured out how to push it yet. I gave this 5 stars anyway because it is such a minor detail for me that I can't take off a whole star for it.
UPDATE: ONE MONTH LATER
This owl has become part of our nightly routine. We set the timer to 30 minutes because my son loves the music and drifts off to sleep listening to it. A few times he has come into our room before the face turns green, but when he does, I put him back to bed and tell him we have to wait for the owl's face to turn green before we get up. Where he used to scream and cry and fight about going back to bed, now there is only minor protest because the owl gives him a time-frame that he can understand. "Twenty minutes" "One hour" "One minute" mean nothing to him. He has no way to measure that. "When the face turns green" is something he can see. And, it is not overly bright. It does not wake him up if he is sleeping. A couple of times he actually slept right past the green-face time. The "ok to wake" music and message only come on if you push the tummy button. Otherwise, the face just quietly turns green.
Previously, I said he hadn't opened the velcro. Well, now he has, but because I had it 'locked' he didn't do any harm by pushing the buttons. Also, becuase nothing happened when he pushed the buttons, he has lost interest and doesn't open the owl anymore.
My son has also figured out how to push the tummy button so that he can hear the music and find out whether it is "ok to wake" yet by himself.
The best part is when I had to change the batteries (the owl comes with batteries but ours only lasted about a month because we have the light and music set to 30 minutes. I'm sure brand-new name-brand batteries will last longer). I had 2 pleasant surprises. One was that the owl gives you warning signs that his batteries are running low. Normally, the owl will be in "ok to wake" mode for about an hour after the time you set (in other words, for about an hour after the time you set as the wake-up time, anytime you push the tummy button, he will say, "It's okay to wake now!" and will play a happy little song, then the light goes off and the music stops unless you press his tummy again.) When his batteris are low, he goes into 'back to sleep' mode almost right away after the first wake-up song (when you push his tummy, he says "It's not time to wake up yet" and plays music for however long you set). This was good in my opinion, because I did not want his internal clock to go screwy and have the face turn green at 2am. The other pleasant surprise was that the settings all stayed when I switched out the batteries. I assumed that with no power, my settings would be lost and I would have to reset everything. There must be a watch battery in there or something, because when I put the new batteries back in, all of my settings remained!
Don't hesitate. Just buy this owl. It is seriously awesome!!
