This review is from: Wake Up to Your Stories: Using the Art of Personal Narrative to Heal Your Past, Nurture Your Relationships & Ask For What You're Worth (Paperback)
As a writer, I am always on the lookout for tips on how I can improve my craft. I picked up this book expecting to learn something new that would make me a better writer, and I did. But I also learned something about myself which I wasn't expecting and that in turn both made me a better writer and, I think, a healthier person.

While I have utilized events from my own life to help craft stories or characters, this book helped me look at my own past in ways I had never considered before. The result was I revisited a time when my father was still alive, and in doing so, discovered some important and powerful things about myself and the impact my father's death had had on me which I didn't realize until reading this book. I subsequently took up a writing exercise that helped me heal some old wounds and come to better grips with the absence of my dad.

I highly recommend this book whether or not you're a writer. The writing is very straightforward and the messages delivered by the author make it easy to tackle personal issues that, whether you're aware of them or not, could use some exploring and resolution. It's a good book to have and revisit from time to time to see if you're on the path you want to me with your life and yourself.
