More About the Author

Writer, traveller, cyclist and gardener: I've always been a dreamer - I wrote my first 'book' while at primary school and making up stories has long been one of my favourite occupations.

I was born in Southampton, England, in 1965 and grew up in a small market town called Romsey.

Over the years that followed I worked as a journalist, PR consultant, gardener and, most recently, teaching English in Portugal.

My latest novel - Pagan's Sphinx - came out on 1st December 2012. This one's published under the pen name William Webster as it's a bit different from my other books. 'Pagan's Sphinx' is an adventure story about an archaeological expedition hunting for a lost statue that may provide a link to the lost civilisation of Atlantis.

My first novel - The Tale Of Findo Gask - was published in 2006 after winning the national final of a UK competition to discover new authors. I've also written several other books and published a collection of short stories.

'The Vault' is published in aid of the disaster relief charity ShelterBox http://www.shelterbox.org (I've been involved with this charity for a few years - I was previously in charge of PR & Fundraising at its UK HQ and in 2010-11 my wife and I undertook a 10,000-mile tandem bike ride in aid of ShelterBox!)

Please visit my blog - at http://hdthomas.wordpress.com - for more information about me and my books, as well as some of my thoughts on being a writer and the creative process. You can also find me on Facebook - look for 'Huw Thomas author'.

I'm always happy to hear from readers - contact me via the blog or Facebook.

Thin Ice is Huw Thomas's fourth title and the first that I have read of his work.

In "Thin Ice" we are introduced to two Danny Harpers. The first Danny, the main character, is riding a bicycle on a country road and is in an accident with an out-of-control car sliding on black ice.

After a banged up and bruised Harper wakes up in the hospital, he soon discovers that he is no longer in the England he knew or the same body.

In addition, Rebecca, his fiancée and the woman he loves doesn't know him in this alternate England causing Danny to fall into a depression. He decides he has to win this Rebecca's (Becca to Danny) heart, which makes for some interesting reading to see how he manages to pull this off -- or not.

In this alternate universe, the first Danny discovers he has inherited the unhealthy body of a Danny that was a heavy drinker and smoker. In addition, instead of being an editor with a secure job, Danny is now a reporter on "thin ice" in danger of losing his job.

It doesn't take long before Danny discovers that a wealthy and powerful deranged serial killer already in jail in the England he came from hasn't been caught yet in this alternate world, and Danny knows where the bodies of several dead woman will be found after they are murdered, but some of them are not dead yet. Armed with this knowledge, Danny risks his life and sets out to stop and catch the killer and save some of the intended victims.

"Thin Ice" is a cleverly crafted book, which kept my attention from start to finish. Although I found that the novel could use a professional copy editor to clean up a few misplaced words, those minor glitches did not distract from enjoying the story.

Danny Harper is involved in an accident while riding his bike, and awakens to find he has lost his former life and is stuck in a parallel timeline – one where he has not achieved his previous level of happiness and status. He has all his old memories, but former coworkers and friends do not, and are frankly skeptical of his story as well as his mental health. As he tries to reclaim what he feels is his rightful place in society, he encounters a serial killer who has not yet been exposed in this universe, and struggles to reveal the crimes before the man can kill again.

A complex, absorbing tale – mystery, suspense, and thrills galore. Well-written and cleverly crafted, the author easily pulls the reader into Danny’s nightmare, and keeps your attention to the end. A few typos were noted, and a couple mis-used words, but certainly not enough to detract from the story. Great job, Mr. Thomas!

This is a very well-written book with a well-crafted, interesting story. Only thing I took issue with is the abrupt ending, which left a huge question for me regarding Harper's parallel universe thing. Toward the end of the book it appeared that something might happen and we'd know one way or he other (i.e., Harper stays in new universe or goes back to old) but the book ended without an answer, which I found frustrating. Hope I find more books by Huw Thomas.

I found this book an extremely interesting read. Had to make myself put it down!! Somewhat a slow start, bit by bit pulling me into the story until I felt like I was looking in a window watching the drama unfold...Thank You for sharing such a gripping page turner!!

At first I was a little confused. But once I understood what the author was establishing I got excited. So much like sliding doors or movies where people are in a coma but can help in a parallel universe. Awesome read.

Very well written. Interesting 'story line' that keeps you interested as to what's going to happen and how.
Scary in the sense that you are going back and forth.

Couldn't tell where main character came from until the end. This a most unusual story. It all comes together in the last sentence.
