4.0 out of 5 stars Not the masterpiece I was expecting after 9 years, but..., May 23, 2007

Waking The Dead does have its high points. I pre-ordered the album from the band and have had the time to digest it fully. This marks the first album that Daniel Neet and Co. has made since 1998's self-titled album(Which was a great record). So after a 9-year wait, was it worth it? Well, yes. At least half of it anyway. Surprisingly, what makes this album weakest is the vocal delivery. Daniel Neet has always had the most unique vocals...very low and haunting. He experiments with his vocal range on Waking The Dead with mixed results. When he sings low, he sounds great. But, there are many songs on here where his vocals are VERY off-key and he ends up wailing in a very wierd way, like he does in Burning Tao. Another hard one to digest is "Swerve" which is a great song ruined by funny sounding "Na na nas". "When Heavens Fall" has melodic, yet heavy cascading guitars. Unfortunately Daniel Neet's vocals dont fit the feel of the music in this song. Other than that, its a fine album. The musicianship is tight, the production clean, and Dan Dinsmore jazz-style drumming is on key as ever. This is a fantastic hard rock album that balances heaviness and melody quite well when the melodies are on-key and appropriate. The high points of the album are Supersonic Overdrive, which is a great straight-up rock song with tough-as-nails vocals, Waking The Dead is another great highlight with a hard-rock approach and an eerie chorus that explodes at the end with grating screams/yells. There is still the tribal Killing Joke-esque feel to their music with certain songs. Other highlights include Monsters(great original melody in chorus here), Never Give Up(another awesome chorus), Emptiness, Failure, etc. The only real skippers are Swerve, When Heavens Fall, Anchient One Interlude, and Burning Tao. So, if you are a fan and like the 1998 album or even the more stripped-down brutal records like Iron Icon and Stone(10)Stitches, then I will recommend this to you. Just be prepared to be thrown off by some really odd singing at times. I fully support this band and its good to have them back. I hope this album at least gives them enough exposure to make another record sooner than 2016! The Hard Rock album of 2007.

Enjoy

Well, they are a local favorite, so I have a soft spot for these guys. They have been playing for many years and actually had some support label wise a few years ago, which was cool. Especially being from Albany NY. But its back to square 1. Sucks for them and they actually broke up for a while. Then reformed and finally issued this follow up full length disc.(They have an EP called 'The Headhunter demos' that isnt available here. That was good stuff!).

Now the CD itself? Not that good. Especially after having so many years between drinks. The songs are mid tempo for the most part and not much happens. There are a lot of tracks, but not many of real substance. I wont point out their faults to be kind. Will just say they go nowhere. The good ones are 'Supersonic..', 'Lost'(awful lyrics though), 'Swerve' and 'Obstacle'. Also, I do like the slow paced 'Secret'. Even with the bad vox in spots. But they aren't great or groundbreaking, Just decent. I really wont be running to play this like i was with the S/T CD and the EP I spoke of earlier. The sound quality is pretty decent though, I will say that.

But because they are local and because not many will read this anyway, I will give them 3 stars. I will say if they were one of my favorites bands, I would be quite disappointed. They should have had better stuff after so many years. It comes across direction-less. I hope they really try harder on the next disc....If there ever is one.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty solid and worth the wait!, December 4, 2007

Like the other reviewers I was totally stoked on the Clay People's last album and I was beginning to think that it would be the last we'd hear from them, so imagine my surprise! Anyway, I've been listening to it for about a week now, and initially I was a little disappointed, if only because the bar was so high from the Clay People's last effort. By about the third listen it really started to grow on me. I think this just might be one of the best albums I've picked up this year and there have been some good ones! Overall I love their sound and there are only a few "weak" songs. The Clay People are back with a vengeance! The song "Lost" alone is worth buying the CD for, catchy and hooky and just want I'd expect from them. I hope they don't wait another 9 years to put out another album!
