Warbringer matures, leaves retro-thrash stigma behind.,
By The Kreator (Canton, OH USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Waking Into Nightmares (Audio CD)
I'm a big thrash metal fan, so the last couple years have been good to me as far as young new metal bands to check out. Warbringer's first release 'War Without End' was a great debut, and I was hoping they would be able to keep the momentum going with their sophomore release 'Waking Into Nightmares' and I have not been disappointed. If you listen to thrash metal, you know what to expect from a band like this, so I won't bother explaining the basics. What I can tell you is Warbringer have improved upon their retro-thrash formula with powerful vocals that never let up, excellent, memorable riffs, a wicked new drummer, and great production (go Gary Holt!!). Warbringer brings thrash metal into the present, making it sound fresh and new, rather than something that was written and recorded a quarter century ago. The song structures are built around the brutal guitar work and vocals that made Warbringer stand out from their peers. Only now they have a drummer skilled enough to keep up with the twin guitar attack and vocal onslaught. If you're just getting into metal, this is a great CD to grab. If you're in love with the old school, there's plenty for you to like here as well.
Side Note: It bothers me when these new thrash bands are judged only against the bands that started the movement (Exodus, Metallica, etc) and not against their peers (Evile, Violator, etc.). It also bothers me when people speak out against these new thrash bands simply because they're playing thrash metal and weren't playing in 1985. It's not like those early bands had an exclusive license to play thrash metal. Be thankful these kids are into better music now. We could still be in the nu-metal era...

Like many have noted, this release shows progression over their last one. It's still very thrashy and intense, but the songs are better constructed and more memorable. The riffs are outstanding. Pretty much, Warbringer set themselves ahead of their peers with this release. Their overall sound is very reminiscent of Demolition Hammer, but more versatile. This is probably one of the best thrash albums released in the past few years.

Currently the best at new old school thrash. Anything new here? Nope. Thats just fine with me. Sometimes the old blueprint is the best.

This album kicks so much butt!
Anybody who loves 80s thrash--Exodus, Metallica, Slayer, and most especially Demolition Hammer, needs to get this album in their collection! Emo and -core wimps need not apply!

Who would have thought thrash metal would be back with such a vengeance? As it was in 1983 or so, you have to wade through the garbage to get the real deal, and Warbringer is the real deal. There's a clear Exodus influence here, and IMHO, this is better than any record Exodus has ever made. Great arrangements, killer riffs, a fierce singer, slamming drummer. Highly recommended. \m/

Warbringer- Take 2,

Warbringer is an awesome new Thrash Metal band that is pure Speed and Heaviness and their Second Album is even better than the first.
First things first the drumming on this Album compared to the first one is greatly improved and makes the band even better. The blazing fast riffs and the anger in the Vocalists voice is a perfect Combination. The same things that made the first album great are all here but better produced so the band sounds even better. The songs are good once again. My personal favorite tracks are "Living in a Whirlwind", "Severed Reality" ,"Schorched Earth", "Sensless Life" , and "Forgotten Dead". Overall this is the perfect 2nd Release for a band, Taking what made the first one good and building on it, and that makes this a must own for Thrash Metal fans.

Good album altogether. Sounds like a mix of Exodus, Slayer and Metallica. I liked every song as it harkens back to the hey day of thrash when it was all new and exciting. I do hear a blatant Call of Ktulu rip off in the song Nightmare Anatomy but it still isn't that bad. Check it out if you like real metal without all of the core and annoying breakdowns.

I love with this group and album. Amazing talent. Saw them live recently with Bonded By Blood, and these guys know how to thrash. Amazing showmanship, and clean live musical performance!

The drums on Nightmare Anatomy are so amazing, and the rest of the album has a great mix of feel and rhythm that combine an 80's thrash sound with modern metal's intensity. Incredible band, great album.
