5.0 out of 5 stars Warbringer matures, leaves retro-thrash stigma behind., July 30, 2009

I'm a big thrash metal fan, so the last couple years have been good to me as far as young new metal bands to check out. Warbringer's first release 'War Without End' was a great debut, and I was hoping they would be able to keep the momentum going with their sophomore release 'Waking Into Nightmares' and I have not been disappointed. If you listen to thrash metal, you know what to expect from a band like this, so I won't bother explaining the basics. What I can tell you is Warbringer have improved upon their retro-thrash formula with powerful vocals that never let up, excellent, memorable riffs, a wicked new drummer, and great production (go Gary Holt!!). Warbringer brings thrash metal into the present, making it sound fresh and new, rather than something that was written and recorded a quarter century ago. The song structures are built around the brutal guitar work and vocals that made Warbringer stand out from their peers. Only now they have a drummer skilled enough to keep up with the twin guitar attack and vocal onslaught. If you're just getting into metal, this is a great CD to grab. If you're in love with the old school, there's plenty for you to like here as well.

Side Note: It bothers me when these new thrash bands are judged only against the bands that started the movement (Exodus, Metallica, etc) and not against their peers (Evile, Violator, etc.). It also bothers me when people speak out against these new thrash bands simply because they're playing thrash metal and weren't playing in 1985. It's not like those early bands had an exclusive license to play thrash metal. Be thankful these kids are into better music now. We could still be in the nu-metal era...

Warbringer waves the metal flag proud and high with this awesome metal release. Great lyrics, awesome songs, killer riffs, excellent drums and good vocals. This is one of my fav new metal bands.

Like many have noted, this release shows progression over their last one. It's still very thrashy and intense, but the songs are better constructed and more memorable. The riffs are outstanding. Pretty much, Warbringer set themselves ahead of their peers with this release. Their overall sound is very reminiscent of Demolition Hammer, but more versatile. This is probably one of the best thrash albums released in the past few years.
