Book Description

“How did you end up in Korea?” is a question that most people have asked when they learn that I have lived and worked in South Korea.

“I turned left at Japan,” I’ve often replied, tweaking a famous line from The Beatles’ A Hard Day’s Night when John Lennon was asked, “How did you find America?” upon which he replied, “Turned left at Greenland.”

When the author arrived in Korea in December of 1990, the country was still reeling from hosting the successful 1988 Olympics. It was an exciting time to be here; one could feel the energy and sense that the nation was poised to become a major player on the world stage. People have often talked about this “Miracle of the Han” when Korea’s economy started to take off in the 70s, but by the time Miller arrived here, it was no longer a miracle; instead, it had become a celebration.

The Korea that Miller knew back in 1990 was different and removed from the Korea of today. In the time that he has been here, he has seen a lot of changes and became witness to many historical events, which have affected not only the peninsula and the region, but also the world.

There are many stories to be told and shared; these are some of them.

5.0 out of 5 stars You can be there from the comfort of your armchair March 25, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
This book presents an opportunity to feel what it's like to take a gamble and move to a part of the world far from the familiarity of home. Reading it is like going with Jeffrey -- from finding a job, to finding a place to live, to finding his voice as a journalist and writer. There are experiences here you won't find anywhere else. Jeffrey is an excellent writer, and has done a great job putting this book together. Readers can enjoy "Waking Up" in short bursts or long, slow reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fascinating journey! August 14, 2012

When Jeffrey Miller went on an interview for an ESL teaching position, his heart was set on moving to Malasia. But he didn't get the job, and spent the next few months working in a Del Monte canning factory. Then came the call that changed his life, and another interview landed him in downtown Seoul . Up until that point, Miller admitted, most of what he knew about Korea came from watching M*A*S*H on TV. That was true for me, too, until I began reading Waking Up in the Land of the Morning Calm, the story of Miller's odyssey in a land where men's underwear is called "panties" and they believe that sleeping with a fan on will kill you. I learned a lot of wild and interesting things about the culture and politics, and thoroughly enjoyed the trip!

Hi Jeffrey,

I've just finished reading your book. I bought it last December, shortly before I moved to Incheon from Auckland, New Zealand. I immediately found it easy to relate to the opening pages of your book in dealing with uncertainty and culture shock.

A fortnight ago, I went to the USO JSA tour and found it interesting to read your perspectives of this frightful place on the numerous times you visited there.
