From Booklist

Devin Hillis makes documentaries about the elderly. The shorter ones are played at funerals as tributes to the deceased. Devin’s prize project, however, is a major documentary featuring the residents at Desert Gardens, an assisted-living facility. The problem is, Devin doesn’t have the heart to collect his fees from bereaved family members, and his big project isn’t finished, so basically, he has almost no income. With his landlord threatening eviction, and his partner wanting out, Devin still believes in his documentary. As Devin continues to film at Desert Gardens, he notices Treha Langsam, an unremarkable-looking woman deeply engaged in conversations with the residents, most of whom seem hopelessly uncommunicative. Treha, the product of foster homes, is a whisperer, and somehow has been blessed with the ability to communicate with those with dementia and Alzheimer’s. Writing in his trademark lyrical style, Fabry (Borders of the Heart, 2012), spins a poignant tale about our society’s invisible seniors and the woman and man who see their potential. --Shelley Mosley --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

From the Back Cover

“Our stories intertwine in ways we can’t know when we first hear them. And maybe the point of all this is that we’d do well to listen.”

Treha Langsam is a mysterious young woman who has fallen through the cracks, much like many of the elderly people she works with at Desert Gardens. But Miriam Howard, director of the assisted-living facility, sees her extraordinary gift and untapped potential. Treha is a whisperer of sorts, calling those who have slipped into dementia back to a life of vibrant, if only temporary, clarity.

When a documentary team stumbles onto Treha’s story, her gift is discovered and the search for answers about her past begins. As the truth slowly unravels, Treha and those around her must each tackle a difficult question: if this is as good as life gets, is that enough?

With authentic characterizations and riveting prose, bestselling author Chris Fabry delivers an uplifting, human tale of an ordinary woman with an extraordinary gift. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

More About the Author

What if this is as good as life gets? Are you okay with that?

This question has haunted me over the past few years. Five years ago we moved to the desert for health reasons. Looking for recovery in a dry and thirsty land. And I realized my soul was more thirsty than anything.

Every Waking Moment is my effort to take some of the pain and loss of life and sift it through the life of a young woman who's been marginalized in society, working among people who are marginalized (the elderly). This character, Treha, has an extraordinary gift that few observe because she's "different."

Like most of my tales, it's a love story, a mystery, part thriller--but mostly a character sketch of lonely people looking for hope. And it's my intent that you find hope and meaning for your own life through Treha's journey.

ABOUT CHRIS

I was born in West Virginia in 1961. I read a lot, but not very fast, and wrote poems, songs, and transcribed Marx Brothers movies and memorized dialogue.

In 1984 I met Jerry Jenkins at Moody Bible Institute. He offered to help me learn to write and I took him up on the offer. In 1998, Jerry and Dr. Tim LaHaye hired me to help write the Left Behind: The Kids series. After that I worked on several other series for children and then published my first adult novel in 2008. It took more than six years to write Dogwood and find a publisher. It received a 2009 Christy Award.

My next novel, June Bug, drew its themes from the classic Victor Hugo tale, Les Miserables. Then, Almost Heaven released and also won a Christy Award, as well as the 2011 Christian Book Award for Fiction.

Not in the Heart is another riveting, suspenseful, and yet relational story. A mystery within a mystery within an addiction. I dedicate it to all who have someone in their life who is addicted. This story also received a Christy award.

Borders of the Heart is my nod toward some of the great western writers--Cormac McCarthy and Larry McMurtry. It's a love story, a painful story of loss, a mystery, and an edge-of-your-seat thriller. I hope you enjoy the ride through Tucson and the surrounding area as much as I did.

I graduated from the W. Page Pitt School of Journalism at Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia. I have been married to Andrea since 1982. We have nine children. In October of 2008 our family evacuated our house in Colorado, leaving behind all our belongings because of a toxic mold situation. Since then we have been living near Tucson, Arizona, working on recovering our health after the mold exposure.

I often spend a lot of time reviewing the newest books set to be published. I do this so that I can bring you some of the best books for my column here in the Book Fun Magazine. As I was looking over the books coming out soon, an email come across my desk about a Book Fun Chat that was going on that involved Chris Fabry. I have been fascinated with his work since I read his book, "Not In The Heart". I do a fair amount of reading (insert laugh here) and there aren't many that I can say cause me to finish the book right from the moment I crack the book open. That book was one of them. I picked this book up during the chat that night with Chris Fabry over on the Book Fun Network hoping that he was able to recreate that feeling in me again.

There's something special going on over at Desert Gardens Retirement Home. Their longtime director, Miriam Howard, is being forced out of her position and into retirement. As Miriam ponders retired life, she begins to reflect on her relationship with her husband. What will it be like to be home with him every day, especially when things between them cause her to feel more as an acquaintance rather than a family. Devin and Jonah are documenting stories of some of the residents that live at the facility. Their goal is to create memories of these residents, and insight into their lives and stories that we will one day never have a record of. The young cleaning lady, Treha, is seemingly bringing some of the residents back from living in a fog with their illnesses. Patients who seem to be lost in the abyss of Dementia or Alzheimer's are communicating with her, after years of not being able to communicate with anyone.

Chris Fabry writes beautiful, truthful stories with the love of Christ! This story started slowly but I am so glad I continued to read it. I think we can all learn about the Treah in all of us! Chris can write from his heart to ours and it is a gift. Thank you Chris Fabry.

Every Waking Moment is a story about
Treha, a custodian in an assisted living facility, who has an incredible gift. She has a unique ability of relating to the elderly patients and helping those who might be considered lost to find their way back.

Devin is filming a documentary about the residents at Desert Gardens, the same nursing facility where Treha works. After an unlikely meeting, Devin becomes interested in Treha's extraordinary ability and shifts the focus of his documentary to tell her story. As details are revealed, the documentary begins unlocking her past.

The chapters alternate between Treha's story and scenes from the documentary. Having the documentary interspersed throughout the novel was an great idea, but I thought it was a bit confusing and the scenes were often unrelated to what was going on.

I have enjoyed other books by Chris Fabry, but this one was just ok. Treha is an interesting character, but I found the details of her life to be too unrealistic, and I just couldn't get into this plot.

As a book reviewer I received this book free from Tyndale House Publisher for my review. The thoughts I have expressed are my own. I was not required to write a positive review.

Treha has a very special gift. She can reach the elderly when no one has heard their voice in months or years. She's considered handicapped, but can somehow get these people to talk. Her boss, Miriam, has allowed a documentary team into the retirement facility to capture the stories of the elderly before they are lost. But as they follow the residents they find Treha. Her story is something that is haunting and mysterious. Soon her story involves everyone around her as secrets are brought into the open.

Several stories were all being told at once. The author did a good job of weaving the stories together and connecting all of the dots without drowning the reader in too many details. The story had a bit of an Erin Brochovich feel as the reader was given clues as to why Treha was different. It is a story of hope and forgiveness all wrapped up in a thought provoking work of fiction. The author had a great style of writing, but I could not get into the story. The characters didn't interest me. But I appreciated the way the author put everything together and enjoyed his style of writing. So I will be checking out his other books.

I received this book free of charge from Tyndale in exchange for my honest review.
