5.0 out of 5 stars Uplifting, inspiring and completely satisfying
After watching this movie I knew I had to get the soundtrack. It is a tribute to the cinematographer as well as Shaun Davey. When I listen to the CD, the magnificent Irish landscape comes back alive in my mind every time I play it, which is almost daily. The CD ranges from traditional upbeat Irish folk to more mellow meditative music. Note: this is mostly an...

3.0 out of 5 stars Slightly Disappointed...
After reading all of the glowing reviews for this soundtrack on this website, I must admit that I was a little disappointed when I bought the CD. I was expecting a more upbeat selection of Irish folk music. Instead, most of the songs are a bit drab. Overall, I enjoy listening to the album and I would reluctantly recommend it to a friend ("Fisherman's...

When I listen to the CD, the magnificent Irish landscape comes back alive in my mind every time I play it, which is almost daily. The CD ranges from traditional upbeat Irish folk to more mellow meditative music. Note: this is mostly an acoustic album, but if you liked the music and want to remember the mood you felt when you left the theatre ( If you are a fan of this movie, you know what I mean ) then short of popping the DVD into a large screen surround sound home theatre, this is the next best thing.

5.0 out of 5 stars The soul of Ireland, April 23, 2000
By
Ellen Sue Blakey (Thermopolis, Wyoming) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Waking Ned Devine: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
You don't have to have seen the movie to appreciate this incredible music -- although if you haven't, it is a personal loss, for the movie itself is a great fable -- a tale of friendship, with twists of irony and dancing (at arm's length) with the devil; it's one of those tiny jewels that oftentimes gets lost in the shuffle of big budget extravaganzas. And unlike so many films where music is inappropriate or overrides the story, Davey's score is a tale in itself -- fresh, vital -- ranging from the lone sounds of ancient rhythms and pipes to combinations that bring the old into the new century. It is the soul of Ireland, one foot in the past, one in the present, with all the beauty and sadness that entails. If you have any feeling for Celtic music, this is an album that will mesmerize -- even haunt you -- and uplift you -- with a rich heritage of sound lurking in incredible thematic variations -- one of those pieces where the music becomes part of your own head and heart. It's a winner.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect Compliment to the Movie, February 19, 2006

I would have bought this album for "The Parting Glass" alone. A truly immersive soundtrack which encompasses the wry humor and simple beauty of Waking Ned Devine. This film was one of those which cheers me up when I watch it, and the soundtrack allows that feeling to again pervade. A perfect sound representing a quieter, gentler place while retaining a sense of quirky liveliness.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best., July 19, 2002
This review is from: Waking Ned Devine: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
The best movie soundtrack, period. I have collected quite a few and there are always a few songs that I could do without. Not here. From the beginning to the end, you may not be able to fight the urge to dance a jig or sing out loud. If you loved the movie, there is no question that you can't do without this CD!

5.0 out of 5 stars my review, December 24, 2001

If you ask me, the song 'The Parting Glass" is worth the entire album. The first time I saw that there was a soundtrack I knew I had to have it because of that one song. It is the song that really cut an impression into my mind the first time I saw the movie. The rest of the album is great, but that is the song that truely stands out in my memory. Another great song is 'The Lotto Man Cometh'. It is another song that sticks out, but not as far as 'The Parting Glass'. I would highly reccomend this album to anyone who cares to buy it.

This is the first soundtrack that has not disappointed me, even a little. Even Jackie's spoken tribute to his friend Michael at the funeral is there. If you loved the movie you will love the CD. It is the first time I have heard the Waterboys and "Fisherman's Blues". I know, where have I been? I have ordered more of Shaun Davey's music because of this movie and this soundtrack.
Shaun Davey, it is sheer poetry. THANKS

5.0 out of 5 stars The Parting Glass, January 30, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Waking Ned Devine: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
The first time I heard "The Parting Glass" was during the conclusion of a documentary about the last game at Tiger Stadium in Detroit. This song played as Al Kaline, the Hall-of-Famer, took one last look around the empty stadium before heading down the tunnel for the last time. The tears flowed and I knew I had to find a copy of this song. I was, therefore, delighted when I watched "Waking Ned Devine" and this was the last song played in the movie. Since buying the CD I have played this one song over and over again. It alone is worth the price of the entire CD. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars A masterpiece, May 4, 2005
This review is from: Waking Ned Devine: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
I finally have a CD player in my car. Guess which CD was first to sound its tune while I was driving? 'Waking Ned Devine' is relaxing . . . haunting . . . optimistic . . . bringing smile to my face. The CD samples folk music, Irish Rock, Blues, windpipe as well Celtic meditative acoustic tunes. The funny as well as touching themes are invigorating. By the way, do yourself a favor. See the movie too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Goodnight and joy be to you all, June 6, 2001
This review is from: Waking Ned Devine: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
Wow, what a CD! One of my favorites of all time, this is a fantastic bit of Irish music. I agree with all the people below that "The Parting Glass" is worth the whole thing. What a song! It will bring tears to your eyes because of its perfect beauty and simplicity. However, just because they have one heavenly song doesn't mean that the others are any less wonderful. The Fisherman's Blues, performed by Mike Scott and the Waterboys, is a rolicking bit of Irish rock. The Lotto Man Cometh contains a beautifully haunting whistle descant, and Michael's Ride will make you get up and dance very single time you hear it. An Angel Will Cry is a gorgeous duet between a bagpipe and a violin. These are just a few of the 15 fantastic songs on the album! If any reader out there is curious about the music being too much of a backround soundtrack, I can honestly say that only one comes even close to being so. Each one stands alone.

As a collector of Irish music, I truly love this CD. I'm a big fan of movie soundtracks, and this is one of the best. Normally I don't like spoken words in recordings, but the small 'eulogy' in "Lux Eterna" is lovely. Some Irish music can be a bit heavy going but every cut in wonderful. Heartily recommended!
