5.0 out of 5 stars fantastic and enlightening
I loved this book - it was very readable while expressing some deep spiritual and psychological truths. Steve Taylor has a great gift for making profound and potentially difficult concepts very accessible. 3.0 out of 5 stars Good as Spirituality 101
My title isn't really intended to denigrate the book; some of it is in fact interesting and informative. However, it's most informative to those who'd want an essential or basic understanding of the kinds of consciousness expanding experiences that the author writes about. As such, it doesn't thoroughly explore spirituality so much from a "non experiential" basis...

I loved this book - it was very readable while expressing some deep spiritual and psychological truths. Steve Taylor has a great gift for making profound and potentially difficult concepts very accessible. It's not a book of spiritual teachings as such, but a book that tries to understand temporary spiritual experiences, how they occur and if it's possible to make them permanent. It's rare to find a person of such obvious spiritual awareness combined with a very acute intellect. A very important book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A gentle reminder of forgotten knowledge!, January 1, 2011
By
S. Schreiber (New York, NY USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I was given a copy of 'Waking From Sleep' by a good friend...best gift, by far!

'Waking From Sleep' is a gentle reminder of knowledge that we have forgotten. We have all had "Ah ha!" moments, where EVERYTHING suddenly makes sense. We have a greater comprehension of the Universe, our role in the Universe, our connection to everything & everyone. These moments are often clarifying, humbling, awe-inspiring, and incredibly indescribable...and yet many of us never speak of or share the experiences with others. Having had quite a number of these experiences throughout my life, it was beautiful to read of others having similar experiences!

'Waking' is not a "how-to" book, which I found wonderful. It seeks to explore the nature of awakening experiences, and offers practical suggestions to bring these moments of clarity into your life, as well as make them last as long as possible. It's a gentle nudge onto the path that is right for you, and a gentle reminder of knowledge that we already have within us but seem to have forgotten.

I've suggested this book to many close friends, and suggest it to you as well! VERY enlightening read!

5.0 out of 5 stars amazing, April 6, 2010
This review is from: Waking from Sleep (Paperback)
This book delivered all i was expecting from my reading of Taylor's other books - making time and the fall.

it gives and excellent overview of the whole area of enlightenment , and spiritual / religious experiences. and then goes on to provide a road map we can follow to get there ourselves. of particular use to me was his deconstruction and classification of the different types of experience and their differing sources. he has done what i imagine Victorian / Edwardian gentlemen to have done in the early days of modern science - taken a chaotic jumble of different 'types' and organized them into species, genre, genus and so on. - an order (much like the periodic table)that gives us a much more complete and instant understanding of where everything lies. fantastic -

highly recommended

i'd also recommend; How to Live in the Here and Now: A Guide for Accelerated Practical Enlightenment! for a detailed description of how to apply various techniques to release one's self from ego / time / values and so on.- compared to so many enlightenment atlases out there - I'd say this is the travelers guide.

5.0 out of 5 stars Waking to Life, December 29, 2010
Taylor describes beautifully the experience of wakefulness and shows some of the many ways modern life numbs us to our natural capacity for wonder and immediacy. I've read The Fall as well, and I'm pleased to say this book contains the same light touch. He speaks easily about very deep issues without ever sounding preachy or going guru on his reader. Overall, an excellent book.

5.0 out of 5 stars So good, I bought the author's other books as well!, April 21, 2011

Have you ever wondered why you have a mystical experience? It just seems to come out of nowhere. Well, this book dispels the mystery in the mystic! We learn from Steve exactly what causes these peak experiences, as well as the three levels of their intensity.

The author also explains the differences between temporary and permanent shifts. He gives examples of and essays by people who have had these experiences.

The author claims we need to wake up to save not only humanity, but the Earth. He provides tools to do so. Drug experiences and even traveling can give you temporary experiences, but it seems meditation is the best way to pursue a permanent shift.

This book was so good that I bought the author's others books. Since one is only available to me (I live in Ecuador) by Kindle, I even got my kindle out of the box it had been in for nearly a year, and finally used it!

5.0 out of 5 stars An Outstanding Book, February 3, 2011
This review is from: Waking From Sleep (Kindle Edition)
What a delightful read, extremely well researched, very informative, inspirational. I highly recommend this book for all those interested in making affective changes within the self. If only we could awaken from our sleep, it might provide the spark for positive changes for all humankind. Accolades to Steve Taylor for one of the best books I have read on conscious awareness.

5.0 out of 5 stars A rare gem., January 15, 2011

This book probably combines the most comprehensive and insightful description of awakening experiences. It is not so much a "how to" book as an in-depth exploration of the human condition of waking up and the varieties of these experiences. It is rare to see such beautiful synthesis of intellectual research and experience based narrative from this book. It is most simple and profound in affirming the timeless message that all spiritual paths lead to the awakening nature that is simple and innately in all of us.

5.0 out of 5 stars Powerful and clear, January 7, 2012
This is one of the best books I have read for a long time. Steve Taylor writes very clearly and it's always easy to read even when it deals with some more weighty material. I love the way it describes childhood as a naturally 'wakeful' state, and the differences between indigenous peoples' view of reality and ours. Our 'awakening experiences' are a glimpse of that fresh spiritual vision of the world, and this book shows how, in theory, we can generate these experiences consciously. We've lost something and this book describes how we lost it, and how we can get it back. Steve Taylor presents a revolutionary view of human nature and human consciousness which makes deep intuitive sense, and reminds you of something you feel you've always known.

However, it's most informative to those who'd want an essential or basic understanding of the kinds of consciousness expanding experiences that the author writes about. As such, it doesn't thoroughly explore spirituality so much from a "non experiential" basis. Moreover, it gets repetitive rather often, with the author too often rehashing material he already covered.

5.0 out of 5 stars Illuminating - a great read, January 27, 2012
'One of the best books on spiritual awakening I have read' - I agree with Eckhart! It makes a great contribution because it makes these experiences understandable. They're not mysterious mystical experiences anymore, and there are reasons why they happen. I think this book will be seen as very important in studies of mysticism and spirituality in years to come. A rare combination of a serious book which is very easy to read and enjoyable too.
