Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Smith shakes up the midlife marriage renewal subgenre with the emotionally complex tale of Elizabeth Whittington, who has accepted that her marriage to Howe Whittington, the wealthiest man in their small Georgia town, is a sham. Howe cheats, has grown hard over the years, and is less than present in their marriage, but after a stroke lands him in a coma, he wakes up, six months later, a changed man. Suddenly, he wants to work on repairing their marriage and helping others fix the problems in their lives. That, naturally, proves to be difficult, and Elizabeth, meanwhile, must decide if she can trust her husband while he tries to right some wrongs, and, in the process, reveals a trove of town secrets. That the story isn't a freewheeling comedy sets it apart from the pack; Elizabeth's struggles feel real (though Howe remains a little cartoonish), and the way Smith (The Red Hat Club) leaves Elizabeth to pursue or abandon her marriage on her own terms is a refreshing departure from convention.

From Booklist

Strange as it sounds, Elizabeth’s marriage to Howe Whittington takes a turn for the better when the philandering bully suffers a massive stroke in church one Sunday. After surgery to remove a benign brain tumor leaves the scion of the town’s founding family in a coma, Elizabeth begins contemplating a new life, one that might include altering the platonic relationship she has been enjoying with an old high school flame. Then Howe wakes up a changed man: he cusses, he cries, and he’s randy as all get-out. Chastened by his deathbed epiphany, Howe is determined to make amends for everything he has ever done wrong—which will take some time, because he has alienated practically everybody in this small Georgia town. First on his list: get Elizabeth to fall in love with him again, followed by reining in their out-of-control teenage daughter, and putting his domineering mother in her place. A rousing paean to newly empowered middle-aged women everywhere, Smith’s zesty read-in-one-sitting romp promises to delight loyal fans and garner new ones. --Carol Haggas

More About the Author

New York Times best-selling author Haywood Smith did not start writing till she was forty. Seven years of learning, writing, and rewriting later, St. Martins Press published the first of six critically acclaimed, best-selling historical novels about "strong women, hunky heroes, accurate history, and upbeat endings."

After a devastating divorce left her financially destitute, she switched to writing humorous Southern women's fiction about Baby Boomer women who help each other through their various trials with creativity, loyalty, and lots of fun, earning Haywood a place on the New York Times best seller list. ("I sent my ex a thank-you note.")

Haywood adored her mother-in-law, who lived across the street for twenty-five years, then moved in at Haywood's invitation after the divorce. In her mother-in-law's memory, Haywood wrote a fun, helpful handbook titled THE TWELVE SACRED TRADITIONS OF MAGNIFICENT MOTHERS-IN-LAW.

Haywood loves to do stand-up comedy about her life (It's been wild.) and waives her speaker's fee for women's charity fundraisers, Red Hat regional meetings, and Friends of the Library groups. Contact her at haywood100@aol.com with EVENT in the subject line for particulars.

She also loves to hear from her fans at haywood100@aol.com and personally answers all her e-mails.

From the time I first filched "Queen Bee" from my sister-in-law, I've been sold on Haywood Smith. Thanks to Amazon, I was able to find her earlier books as well. And then came her "Red Hat" series... Anyone with girlfriends will enjoy those...and then came the sequel...and Ladies of the Lake..."Mother-in-Law" came along just as we were preparing for my daughter's wedding...need I say more? I ordered "Waking up in Dixie," thinking I'd keep it to read on an upcoming cruise to the Mexican Riviera. Nope! I opened the book, telling myself I'd just read a page or so...and I was hooked! Finished it about 5:30 this morning. Anyone living in the South will appreciate her characters and if you're not southern-born, I guarantee you'll wish you were after you read them. With this book you see a woman just living her life as it comes. Her days are boring and her husband the epitome of the evil banker...until his stroke. All of a sudden, nothing but the truth comes out of his mouth - it's almost Ebeneezer Scrooge revisited; something you can imagine but it'd never happen...until now. Haywood, I love you and I love your characters. How you keep bringing us these great women who are all different, but so compelling, I don't know; but rest assured I'm a fan for life, and your books are a great gift to anyone I like. Knowing you're a fellow Red Hatter just tops it all off. Enjoy being a college student, but pllllllease keep writing! Fellow readers, you won't choose wrong if you choose anything written by Haywood Smith, possibly even her grocery list! Enjoy them, I certainly have.

Loved this book! I have never read much for entertainment untill a patient recommended "Waking Up In Dixie" by Haywood Smith. I enjoyed this book so much that I read another book by the same author, "The Red Hat Club". I loved this book also. I would like to read more of Haywood Smith's books if I could get them all for my new Kindle3.

This was a very unrealistic portrayal of a long suffering wife whose husband wakes up from a stroke and turns into a loving and God fearing husband.

Elizabeth Whittington has married "up" from white trash status to the wife of a not so nice millionaire husband. Her husband, Howell Whittington, has been the town banker for 25 years of marriage and Elizabeth has suffered his infidelities and his lack of love for most of those 25 years. But when Howell suffers a stroke and finds Jesus, he wakes from the stroke and turns into a loving husband who seeks redemption.

The story is so unbelievable and saccharine sweet that I was rolling my eyes and hoping I got to the end very quickly. The characters are stereotypical and over the top. The husband's conversion after his stroke is laughable. He turns from a tyrant to a bastion of the community and professes to his wife at every turn that she is the love of his life. There is an overbearing mother-in-law who has made Elizabeth's life a living hell and she also finds redemption by the end of the story. Of course the mother-in-law dies by the end of the story as well.

Predictable foolishness. Not recommended.

You have to put this on the must read list. I could not wait to get to the next page from start to finish. I am so thankful my book club chose this or I might not have read it. It truly is a story of life being changed following an illness. I don't want to spoil the book for you but if you have ever had a spouse that was rotten, somewhere in your mind you dreamed of the day that all would change and what life would be after that. The choices you would make. What effects it would have on the people that new this person before and what happens to them after. I will definitely have this on my personal best read list.

The first part of this book was enjoyable but seemed like a very basic story of husband runs around on wife so wife finds comfort in another's arms. This was not the story, however. It became far more complex and I would recommend this as a very good read. It basically brings you into a family with many common flaws and problems and takes you through their experiences good and bad, how they dealt with them, their regrets and efforts to make amends where needed.
