I purchased this book with the hope that it would provide a good overview of what truly happens in the peri-operative area however I was sorely disappointed when it turned out to be a mere back patting of physicians. The "physician saves the day" is an outdated, overblown, untruth that physicians struggle to keep afloat. Luckily, this old adage has gone by the wayside for a true recognition that patient care is dependent on the entire health care team, not one aspect of it. His depiction of the nursing team is ludicrous and untrue but I find this attitude from some physicians, especially those who feel inadequate in their role. Would I recommend this book, no, which is why I gave it one star. Let it be known if I could have given it zero or minus one star I would have given it that.

Working to save lives can be draining, and a little humor can go a long way to keeping the spirits up. "Waking Up Emily: Antics and Inspiration While Patients Sleep" is drawn from K. Patrick Bonovich's own four decades as a physician working with his staff to assist their patents and provide care. A fascinating look at the care givers and their daily trials and tribulations, "Waking Up Emily" is a heart felt pick, very highly recommended.

The public is not aware of circumstances that occur going into surgery and its after-math. Working in this area, I am quite familiar with them. Obviously, it was written from a doctors perception. I know many hospital personnel who would confirm the events presented in this book. I definitely give it 5 stars.
