Book Description

No matter what kind of change you want to make in your life, WAKING UP HAPPY: A HANDBOOK OF CHANGE WITH MEMOIRS OF RECOVERY AND HOPE holds the keys. As inspirational as it is practical, this first-of-a-kind handbook focuses on the positive steps of recovery and change.
Powerful, absorbing, and beautifully written, WAKING UP HAPPY tells people’s stories, the turning points that changed their lives, and their secrets to waking up happy. Whenever a storyteller learns a new life lesson, you’ll find exercises you can do to put that lesson to use in your own life.
In WAKING UP HAPPY, Jill Muehrcke tells her true story. She also includes the stories of her daughter and granddaughter. Together, these memoirs shine a light on three generations struggling with similar problems and offer clues to how to break the legacy of addiction.
In addition, Jill includes the memoirs of over 30 others recovering from addictions, harmful habits, and intolerable situations. Brave and honest, these stories are filled with triumphs and epiphanies, as well as concrete, step-by-step advice and guidance.
Lessons learned are summarized into secrets you can use to forge your own life-changing journey. The book ends with 365 Steps on Your Journey – one simple step for each day of the year. If you do just one thing from this book every day, you’ll see dramatic growth.
WAKING UP HAPPY is the first book ever to combine memoirs with exercises in a way that ignites change in an almost magical way. Readers say that the combination of true stories and concrete exercises has helped them change their lives as nothing else has been able to do. The memoirs inspire them and the to-do lists prompt them into action.
The exercises are based on decades of research into how people transform their lives. The memoirs provide hope. They show that change really can happen.
Ideally suited to people recovering from addictions or self-defeating habits, WAKING UP HAPPY is also for anyone who has watched a loved one struggle and felt the anguish of not knowing how to help. Indeed, it’s for anyone who longs to move past fear to joy.
One reader calls WAKING UP HAPPY "a treasure trove of delight. It's like a work/play book in the style and spirit of the Motherpeace books. You can read it straight through or just open it at random and find wisdom."
Half of all proceeds from WAKING UP HAPPY will go to the Recovery Foundation (recoveryfoundation.net), helping people lead new lives.

5.0 out of 5 stars Joyful and healing January 31, 2012
Format:Paperback
This book is refreshing and valuable for its emphasis on the joy of recovery. The author's story and the stories of her daughter, granddaughter and other contributors are honest, tender, and filled with hope. The snippets of wisdom and questions offered for reflection are insightful and urge the reader to exercise a compassionate awareness about her own journey. The memoirs are accessible to readers who might be struggling with a variety of challenges. At the heart of it, this book is a resource for anyone who wants to lead a more wholesome and authentic life.

The essence of Waking Up Happy for me was the personal journeys/memoirs on living through and beyond difficult life challenges. The 7 memoirs are unique, honest, thoughtful, complex, and inspiring. I loved each story.

Waking Up Happy is also a handbook, a very useful reference book, on how to live through the most difficult challenges in life. It offers the reader numerous (I am tempted to say exhaustive) ways to consent to and contribute to his or her own happiness each day. Because of the scope and depth of Muehrcke's work, the reader can consult the book daily for specific encouragement and action ideas to make his or her life more wonderful.

This would make a great book club selection because of its wonderful personal stories. I can imagine many great questions and fascinating discussions stimulated by each memoir. Waking Up Happy would also make a lovely gift to treasured friends and family members who may be personally struggling through difficult times or witnessing loved ones struggling. Its positive messages cannot help but lift the reader's spirit.

5.0 out of 5 stars Engaging to read February 6, 2012
Format:Paperback
Open this book to any random page, and you will find something to get your attention. Whether it's a quote, a short exercise, a thought to ponder, or a snippet of wisdom from someone who has traveled a hard road, it will likely be interesting and thought-provoking. The author has done a great job of interweaving stories of recovery with ideas for practical action. Some exercises are things that can be done right away, others are projects that could take a lifetime...but who doesn't want to wake up happy??

The recovery memoirs are honest and inspiring, acknowledging that recovery is often "two steps forward, one step back." However, this book is NOT by any means only for people who wish to overcome addictions--it has something to offer to anyone who is seeking new ideas about how to move forward in life and actively engage in "pursuing happiness." The author draws on diverse resources throughout the text, then makes it easy for us to find out more by organizing a comprehensive index and appendix at the end of the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wake happy! March 1, 2012
Format:Paperback
Waking up happy isn't easy. It's a long, arduous road best not traveled alone. Others tell their stories in Jill Muehrcke's new book, Waking Up Happy. It is a brave and heartfelt chronicle of the struggles and successes that people like you and me have experienced recovering from alcohol and drug abuse. Interspersed within the narratives are inspirational quotes from C. G. Jung, Lao Tzu and others, and workshop-like guides which, taken by themselves are worth the read but which extend and illuminate the stories. It's not a how-to-quit manual, rather a how-to-recover self-actualization resource. It is hope, encouragement and inspiration which can help you if you are struggling or know someone who is.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book! February 8, 2012
Format:Paperback
It's time that we started celebrating recovery and stopped focusing on the tragedies and stigma associated with addiction. This book does just that! It is truly a voice for those of us who are proud of being in recovery.

5.0 out of 5 stars What Price Do You Put On Your Own Happiness? March 24, 2012
Format:Paperback
How much would you spend to be happy? You've seen others spend fortunes and lifetimes chasing happiness. But maybe the answers aren't in luxury cars and getting high. Maybe the answers are in simplicity and peace. This book will help you find happiness. That's priceless.

There is a big difference between being told "do this" or "do that," and offering empathy and empowerment to help you make your own decisions. Jill Muehrcke does the latter in her profound book. Not only are the stories inspiring and the writing eloquent, but the tools for living a better life are applicable to just about any aspect of the human condition. This book doesn't judge the reader, it encourages the reader to look inside herself.

Not to mention that, if you buy the book directly from Jill, a portion of the proceeds go to help others walking a similar path to you. Really, you won't regret adding this to your cart!
