Book Description

September 5, 2007
Breast cancer has reached epidemic proportions. Once a relatively rare disease, it now affects two to three million American women, and the incidence is growing at an alrming rate. What can we do to protect ourselves? Christine Horner, M.D., has the prescription: Eat healthy foods, add a good dose of specific supplements, get adequate rest and exercise, and avoid those things that have negative effects on our bodies. Using the metaphor of the Warrior the Goddess, this book explains what Ayurveda-an ancient system of healing-describes as our "inner healing intelligence." It explores the various foods, supplements, and health-promoting strategies that can enable women to successfully fight breasty cancer and claim the healthy body that should be theirs. Dr. Horner explains what to avoid and what to embrace, what will poison the Warrior Goddess and what will feed her, and what she needs to thrive. "Waking the Warrior Goddess sums up with Dr. Horner's program for reclaiming health and defeating breast cancer. Each step is presented as a new strategy to implement into one's daily life. The program focuses on those nutrients and activities that bring health, vitality, and longevity to women. An extensive rersources section lists contacts for obtaining various nutrients and toxin-free products to keep your Warrior Goddess strong and healthy.

2.0 out of 5 stars Soy NOT a Safe Way to Prevent Breast Cancer September 3, 2006
Format:Hardcover
Awaken the Warrior Goddess! What a powerful and positive message for today's women. Unhappily, Dr. Horner enters the fray with the dangerous advice that women protect themselves from breast cancer by increasing their consumption of soy. In fact, the evidence that soy prevents breast cancer is inconsistent and contradictory at best, with numerous studies showing soy can cause, contribute to or accelerate the growth of cancer, particularly breast cancer. I am not alone in this concern. The Israeli Health Ministry has warned that babies should not receive soy formula, that children to age 18 should consume soy foods or soy milk no more than once per day to a maximum of 3 times per week and that adults should exercise caution because of adverse effects on fertility and increased breast cancer risk. The French Food Agency is now implementing regulations that will require warning labels on soy foods advising consumers of risks to women who have been diagnosed with or have a family history of breast cancer. Cornell University has also warned women at risk for breast cancer to take it easy on soy. Finally, soy contributes to numerous other health problems such as hypothyroidism, infertility and cognitive decline. Awake warriors need to know that POSSIBLE benefits are outweighed by PROVEN risks and a good policy is "better safe than sorry."

5.0 out of 5 stars Practical, Personal, Profound and Powerful April 14, 2005
Format:Hardcover
Read this book. Do not tarry or delay. Waking the Warrior Goddess is 300 pages of can't-put-it-down reading that will immediately alter the cancer odds to favor you. Dr Horner keeps it to the point while keeping it thorough, practical and fun. Tips, insights, crisp writing, clarity, short chapters, sidebars, an "A-list" of the best herbal supplements, loads of memorable quotes and just plain wonderful original artwork make Waking the Warrior Goddess easy to read and re-read. It's magnetic. You will revisit this book, without question.

I liked many things about this book. One small example is the author's final section on "customs" instead of the tedious and overused "steps." Perfect. Dr Horner gives us, in one word, a different, better, gentle, inspiring, insightful way of thinking about changing habits that immediately improve our odds in the horrible life/death cancer equation. It's one of many such fine touches. The publisher, Basic Health has a serious winner here. Kudos to them for publishing a much needed user-friendly masterpiece built on a Gibraltar of the latest and strongest published peer-reviewed placebo-controlled research culled directly from the medical database. Dr Horner's traditional medical education shows in her careful, accurate writing. With this book, you can confidently and effectively start fighting or preventing cancer today. Period. This book will change your odds and your mindset. This book can save your life, and the lives of those you love.

From the 50-thousand foot view, this book is a milestone of insight. The truth is, the talented pen of Dr Horner, a surgeon, expertly peels back the veil on our misguided often deadly assumptions to reveal the dynamic emerging model of medicine and tools that can save and strengthen your health.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Read for All Women April 19, 2005
By Jane H.
Format:Hardcover
Breast cancer. Two words that evoke a visceral terror in most women. Is there anything that can abate the overwhelming sense of helplessness that often accompanies this fear? Or must we simply live with the anxiety of wondering whether someday we may become the next statistic.

As a woman with a family history of breast cancer these were my questions. My aunt died of breast cancer at age 77--young considering that all of her siblings have lived well into their 90's.

Enter Dr. Christine Horner's book Waking the Warrior Goddess. In this groundbreaking book I have found the antidote to the sense of fear and helplessness that surrounds the specter of breast cancer.

Dr. Horner's book is well researched and contains a practical program for making positive changes that support a woman's health on all levels. I found the extensive list of resources to be particularly helpful. And while I have found most books on health topics to be quite dry, this book is the rare exception. Dr. Horner engages the reader with her warm, intimate style. Her passion for her subject matter is apparent. A highlight of the book is her personal story of how the book came to be written.

I highly recommend this book to any woman who is concerned about creating and maintaining a healthful lifestyle that protects her from the scourge of breast cancer. Now is the time to awaken our Warrior Goddess. Do not hit the snooze button. Read this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Supporting Your Immune System August 15, 2005
Format:Hardcover
Dr. Horner cites current research to substantiate her claims about supplements which support the immune system. Although I had breast cancer and have recommended the book to others who have/had breast cancer, this book is really about all the ways you can support your health to prevent disease, and to strengthen your immune response to prevent disease and to the effects of aging.

5.0 out of 5 stars a MUST read for cancer prevention (w/ a few flaws) February 24, 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Horner has compiled one of the best cancer prevention books available. She has read and analyzed nearly every piece of breast cancer research that is out there. This is a must read for anyone wanting to prevent breast cancer, or any other cancer. She highlights things I have not seen elsewhere in prevention literature, such as one glass of alcohol raises your breast cancer risk by as 11 percent. Two drinks of alcohol a day raises your risk by 22 to 40 percent. Three drinks a day adds to your risk by 33 to 70 percent.

She highlights prevention techniques that have the biggest impact on reducing cancer. This is a good approach to encourage people to adopt prevention strategies with the greatest reduction potential in cancer. She details herbs and anti cancer agents that one can take naturally, and discusses their benefits based on research. Drink your green tea! She also includes information on the ayurvedic (traditional Indian) medical system.

A few criticisms from an otherwise stellar book. Her section on soy has a lot of misinformation. Although soy has some documented anti cancer benefits, Horner ignores that soy mimics estrogen - a cancer feeding agent. She also fails to discuss the fact that most soy is GMO, which has the highest pesticide load of crops (it is covered in round up). She ignores research on how GMO foods cause tumors in lab animals. And she encourages replacement of meat with vegetarian options like veggie burgers, which are usually heavily processed soy products full of chemicals. These processed soy foods are deadly!

She also fails to address research on health benefits of healthy saturated fats. She demonizes all fats without discriminating between healthy saturated fat (avocado, coconut and grass fed meat).
