2.0 out of 5 stars Soy NOT a Safe Way to Prevent Breast Cancer, September 3, 2006
Awaken the Warrior Goddess! What a powerful and positive message for today's women. Unhappily, Dr. Horner enters the fray with the dangerous advice that women protect themselves from breast cancer by increasing their consumption of soy. In fact, the evidence that soy prevents breast cancer is inconsistent and contradictory at best, with numerous studies showing soy can cause, contribute to or accelerate the growth of cancer, particularly breast cancer. I am not alone in this concern. The Israeli Health Ministry has warned that babies should not receive soy formula, that children to age 18 should consume soy foods or soy milk no more than once per day to a maximum of 3 times per week and that adults should exercise caution because of adverse effects on fertility and increased breast cancer risk. The French Food Agency is now implementing regulations that will require warning labels on soy foods advising consumers of risks to women who have been diagnosed with or have a family history of breast cancer. Cornell University has also warned women at risk for breast cancer to take it easy on soy. Finally, soy contributes to numerous other health problems such as hypothyroidism, infertility and cognitive decline. Awake warriors need to know that POSSIBLE benefits are outweighed by PROVEN risks and a good policy is "better safe than sorry."

5.0 out of 5 stars Practical, Personal, Profound and Powerful, April 14, 2005

Read this book. Do not tarry or delay. Waking the Warrior Goddess is 300 pages of can't-put-it-down reading that will immediately alter the cancer odds to favor you. Dr Horner keeps it to the point while keeping it thorough, practical and fun. Tips, insights, crisp writing, clarity, short chapters, sidebars, an "A-list" of the best herbal supplements, loads of memorable quotes and just plain wonderful original artwork make Waking the Warrior Goddess easy to read and re-read. It's magnetic. You will revisit this book, without question.

I liked many things about this book. One small example is the author's final section on "customs" instead of the tedious and overused "steps." Perfect. Dr Horner gives us, in one word, a different, better, gentle, inspiring, insightful way of thinking about changing habits that immediately improve our odds in the horrible life/death cancer equation. It's one of many such fine touches. The publisher, Basic Health has a serious winner here. Kudos to them for publishing a much needed user-friendly masterpiece built on a Gibraltar of the latest and strongest published peer-reviewed placebo-controlled research culled directly from the medical database. Dr Horner's traditional medical education shows in her careful, accurate writing. With this book, you can confidently and effectively start fighting or preventing cancer today. Period. This book will change your odds and your mindset. This book can save your life, and the lives of those you love.

From the 50-thousand foot view, this book is a milestone of insight. The truth is, the talented pen of Dr Horner, a surgeon, expertly peels back the veil on our misguided often deadly assumptions to reveal the dynamic emerging model of medicine and tools that can save and strengthen your health. And she does it in a form and structure that invites every reader into that delightful future from page one. The paradigm of modern medicine is shifting -- thank God -- and Dr Horner puts a bright klieg light on the proven tools to enliven the body's powerful inner healing intelligence. This book strongly advances the leading edge of the emerging model of medicine. Read it and live.

I have only one question, and it goes to Basic Health Publications: When is Dr Horner's next book coming out?

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Read for All Women, April 19, 2005
By
Breast cancer. Two words that evoke a visceral terror in most women. Is there anything that can abate the overwhelming sense of helplessness that often accompanies this fear? Or must we simply live with the anxiety of wondering whether someday we may become the next statistic.

As a woman with a family history of breast cancer these were my questions. My aunt died of breast cancer at age 77--young considering that all of her siblings have lived well into their 90's.

Enter Dr. Christine Horner's book Waking the Warrior Goddess. In this groundbreaking book I have found the antidote to the sense of fear and helplessness that surrounds the specter of breast cancer.

Dr. Horner's book is well researched and contains a practical program for making positive changes that support a woman's health on all levels. I found the extensive list of resources to be particularly helpful. And while I have found most books on health topics to be quite dry, this book is the rare exception. Dr. Horner engages the reader with her warm, intimate style. Her passion for her subject matter is apparent. A highlight of the book is her personal story of how the book came to be written.

I highly recommend this book to any woman who is concerned about creating and maintaining a healthful lifestyle that protects her from the scourge of breast cancer. Now is the time to awaken our Warrior Goddess. Do not hit the snooze button. Read this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Supporting Your Immune System, August 15, 2005
By
Rebecca Ruth (Winston Salem,NC) - See all my reviews
Dr. Horner cites current research to substantiate her claims about supplements which support the immune system. Although I had breast cancer and have recommended the book to others who have/had breast cancer, this book is really about all the ways you can support your health to prevent disease, and to strengthen your immune response to prevent disease and to the effects of aging.

4.0 out of 5 stars An essential resource for all women and men too, October 5, 2005
October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and I read this book in the last week of September. So, this is the right time to share my views about this book with you. It also happens that this is the season for worshipping the Goddess Durga to whom the author refers to in the book.

Breast Cancer is one of the more prevalent forms of cancer that is affecting a number of women all over the world. From time immemorial, breasts have been associated with femininity and thus any disfiguration (caused by chemotherapy, radiation and mastectomy) is emotionally traumatic to many women.

Dr.Christine Horner, a Board Certified plastic surgeon has personal experience of seeing the suffering since her mother was affected. In this excellent book, Dr.Horner shares the latest research on the factors that increase the risk of developing breast cancer and the best ways of fighting those risk factors. She combines life style changes and Ayurveda for an effective fight against a deadly, disfiguring and emotionally devastating disease. In fact, her recommendations will most probably protect against other disorders like other cancers and aging too.

The book is spread over 28 Chapters and is followed by the author's 30-step program, and Dr.Horner hastens to assure the reader that they are really not steps and thus there is no sequence. They are life style change suggestions and if really implemented become customs.

The book is highly readable. However, there are a few problems with units of measurement. For example, on Page 74, ppt is defined as parts per thousand and then an absurd figure is given for the concentration of PCBs in waters of the Great Lakes. 1000 ppt becomes 1 or 100%. So, there cannot be a higher value like 17,000,000 ppt. Similarly, a microgram is one millionth of a gram and is one tenth of a milli-centigram. A millicentigram, mcg is one over one hundred thousand.

There are a couple of statistical errors and there are a few slips in text editing too but in general, there is no problem in understanding the subject. In any case, taking of any herbal or mineral supplements etc., is best done with the full knowledge and guidance of the primary health professional and thus the dosage etc., will be taken care of.

These minor deficiencies, I repeat, do not in any way reduce the value of the information given by Dr.Horner in this excellent book.

The publisher's disclaimer of not endorsing any specific product including the product promoted by the author is very apt and the same disclaimer applies to this review and reviewer too. The reviewer doesn't endorse the specific brand of Ayurveda or Meditation that the author recommends. That doesn't reduce the value of the information given in the book.

The book will be found useful not only for US readers but for all women and for that matter all people since men are also adversely affected when their mothers, sisters, wives, lovers and daughters are affected by this disease.

Some Hindu readers of this book in USA or other countries may get offended by the author naming her pet cat, Sita, who is the incarnation of the Divine Mother in Ramayana, the great Indian story of the victory of Rama, the embodiment of virtue over Ravana, representing the demoniacal forces of lust and arrogance. The author could probably rechristen her pet with a culturally proper name.

I really enjoyed reading this book and strongly recommend any one with even a slight interest in cancer in general and breast cancer in particular to read this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brave Warrior tells it how it is, September 18, 2007
It's refreshing to see a book from a medical doctor (a surgeon) that gives practical and natural suggestions for protecting yourself from breast cancer. Most conventional doctors limit their advice to what drugs might be prescribed and what to expect during chemotherapy. This book was packed with lots of truly natural alternatives. Way to go Christine!

5.0 out of 5 stars What a life-changing book this is!!!!!, March 30, 2005
This book reads as smoothly and beautifully as a best-seller novel, but it is a comprehensive fact-filled map of the journey towards true health and the prevention and treatment of breast cancer. Dr. Christine Horner shows us the way to easily achieve this through natural ways....and she writes in a way that surpasses any other book I have read on the subject. Believe me, I have read plenty of books on breast cancer (since it is an issue that looms strongly for me), and most of them simply scare me, or give me nothing to connect to ...but Waking the Warrior Goddess has FINALLY given me the sense that I can really DO something to escape this sense of impending disaster. This book makes it EASY to escape the sense of hopelessness and fear that Western medicine has instilled in most of us. Although it is written specifically for women, there is plenty of information that helps men achieve greater health, too. Every page is uplifting. I look forward to reading ANYTHING Dr. Horner writes. I have given this book as a gift to several friends. It is a MUST READ for women who face the spectre of cancer...and that means ALL OF US!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book, April 4, 2005
By
I read this book while helping edit it (Christine Horner is my aunt) and it truly is the best book on this particular subject. It not only informs women about breast cancer, but helps you understand it, and fight it. My grandmother is smiling down from heaven knowing that other women will have the opportunity to protect themselves as she did not.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent guide, July 11, 2005
Dr. Horner offers so much practical advice in this book. It is a must for those wanting to take control of their lives. Another book that I recommend in addition is one more geared toward those who have recently been diagnosed with cancer. It is called Dancing with the Diagnosis - Steps for Taking the Lead When Facing Cancer, by Michelle Waters. It is specifically a guide to effective, empowering communication when facing life-threatening illness, yet it is similar to Dr. Horner's book in having a more conversational style and colorful, uplifting images.
