5.0 out of 5 stars Great Basket, not too big, not too small
This is my third Wald basket, and it's probably the best choice for most people. It's light, cheap, easy to mount and looks good. Installation was straightforward, and it matches the looks of my retro Schwinn Coffee cruiser very well. It will easily carry a typical backpack. I liked the idea of a front basket and this one looked good. But unfortunately it didn't work well for my situation, and I would think my situation is pretty common. The biggest problem is the handlebar mount. the brackets are bend for a small diamter, whatever that is, I'd say an inch/25.4 mm? This is my third Wald basket, and it's probably the best choice for most people. It's light, cheap, easy to mount and looks good. Installation was straightforward, and it matches the looks of my retro Schwinn Coffee cruiser very well. It will easily carry a typical backpack. It's a great shape for take-out food, and it makes an adequate small dog basket with a folded blanket at the bottom. It's not super strong, and it's not a good choice for heavy items. If you want to carry serious loads, then the Wald 957 is the way to go. It will hold big, heavy items and even medium sized dogs, but it's heavy, a little fussy to mount and will dominate the bike.

I liked the idea of a front basket and this one looked good. But unfortunately it didn't work well for my situation, and I would think my situation is pretty common. The biggest problem is the handlebar mount. the brackets are bend for a small diamter, whatever that is, I'd say an inch/25.4 mm? Most handlebars these days have a larger diamter where mounted to the stem and then tapper off towards the ends. This does not work with this basket. I have tools, probably above average and managed to rebend the brackets for my off the mill stock handlebar on my average raleigh usa bike by clamping the bracket down with a c-clamp and then using a pair of plumbers pliers and that worked fine since the handlebar was made from steel. If it was alluminum, it might not have been that great for the handlebar. But even though this worked, now the screws wouldn't fit anymore, due to the slightly larger diameter, the handlebar is in the way of the screw. I believe that to be really poor design - if the brackets would have been bend for the today common stem diameter and having punched the mounting holes for that diameter, I would think it would work equally well on the "vintage" handlebar diameter by tighting the screws it would just adjust, but this way arround it does not work and this is not mentioned anywhere in the product description. Now I could hardly return the basket so I worked arround this by using cable ties, but I am concerned about the longevity of this solution. Also, since I have a straight mountain bike handlebar the basket is kind of too close to the grips and brake levers and shifters. For my setup the brackets would need to be 1.5 to 2 inches longer, then it would actually be great and I could give this product 4 or more stars.

I believe this basket will only work for you if you have the vintage handlebar diameter before they started tapering it and if your handlebar is a riser style bar with lets say at least 2 inches of rise, otherwise the basket gets in the way of the grips and levers which is borderline dangerous. If that is what you have, this might work well for you. This could be a good product if the handlebar mount could be reengineered to be more universal or adjustable and/or if at least these limitations would get mentioned in the product description.

I wanted a wide but not-too-deep front basket to drive my Jack Russell terrier around. This basket works fine for that. I did have to put a solid foam pad on the bottom so her paws wouldn't stick through but that was very easy and expected. I purchased the black finish basket and it is a nice high gloss finish; I think it might be a baked on powder coat but can't be sure. I installed the basket in about 15 minutes (really) in my garage shop--it is that easy. One installation note: the way the basket attaches to the handle bars, it is possible it will hang tilted backwards at quite an angle on some bikes. The only two options around this are to (a) lower the front fork supports, or (b) twist the handlebar attaching clamps upward (effectively raising the back of the basket). Since option (a) is not possible, owning to only one set of holes on the front fork supports, you can only adjust tilt by the second approach. This is inherently weaker, but I was able to tighten the clamps down enough that it still holds the correct angle (i.e., stays flat). Mounted in this manner I'd guess the basket would hold up to about 20 pounds carried on a routine basis, but not much more.

This basket is just right for me. It's roomy and sturdy. I'm able to load 3-4 bags of groceries in it, I secure my packages with a cargo net. The Wald front basket is probably the most affordable high-quality basket available. It was easy to install but not all the hardware is included. I needed 2 nuts and bolts to attach the support rods which I got from my local bike shop. Because of the lack of hardware, I only gave a 4 star rating. It's a good basket and I would recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exactly what I expected and needed, June 18, 2010

This review is from: Wald 139 Standard Large Front Handlebar Bike Basket (Sports)
I recently bought a 1980s Schwinn World Tourist to commute on. With the economy being what it is, I only spent $25 on the bike. It came with fenders, which were a must-have, but I still needed a way to carry my lunch box. The Wald 139 basket fit the bill!

I had contemplated purchasing the giant basket offered by Wald, but looking at the pictures and reviews decided this size was a more livable option. The basket arrived quickly and was packaged very well. I was surprised how light the box was when I picked it up; a good thing! Installation was a snap, just two bolts on the handlebar mounts then just removing the nuts from the front wheel to put on the supports. The only thing remotely difficult was trying to find the best routing for the shifter and brake cables. It mounts very securely and is light enough to not make too big a difference when unloaded.

I've used it a few times now and really enjoy it. When riding I barely notice it's there, aside from the clunking of the things inside my lunch box. Since there is spare room when loaded, I'm going to make an insert to hold my cell phone (gps) and a water bottle (my frame doesn't have mounts).

When I needed a cheap way to haul a little cargo on my bicycle, the Wald 139 basket on Amazon was the answer (having a gift certificate helped).

A very nicely sized bike basket that was quite easy to install. The only problem was that the nuts and bolts package was short a nut (included 1 rather than 2).

4.0 out of 5 stars Perfect bike basket to complete the look of my cruiser, March 24, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I bought this basket to go on the new cruiser bike I also just bought. Was looking for a basket that my dog would fit in. This basket fits the bill. It is a little shallow, but is the right size. It isn't too big and doesn't look overly tacky on the bike. All we had to do was untighten the bolts on each side of the axle, slide the supporting rod on and then tighten the nut back up. Very easy installation and fit perfectly on the bike. Would recomment to anyone looking for a decent size basket. It is a little hard to steer once my 10 lb dog is in it, but you definately getting accustomed to the different steering after a few trips. Will upload a picture next time I take him for a ride!

What can you say. Wald has been around forever & are still some of the best baskets available. They work especailly well with the retro-cruisers that are now gaining in popularity. The basket fits and is easy to install. quality materials mean it will last forever...AND, I'm always happy to buy a product "made in the U.S.A."!
