We have 9 year old fraternal twin boys. One twin has autism. He has the mind of a sweet 4 year old who loves Thomas the tank engine, but is the size of a 12 year old weighing 90 pounds. We recently picked up a used 20" BMX Boys Vertical Abuse Series Freestyle bike for our autistic son as the one he had with training wheels was just getting too small for him to ride. The training wheels arrived very quickly to us in Portland, Oregon from Niagara Cycle(out of NY). They fit perfectly on the new (used) BMX bike which has a tube frame just under an inch where you would attach the training wheels support brace. The training wheels are VERY SOLID AND STRONG and are built to last! They support our 90 pound son perfectly. He feels safe and confident riding his BMX bike. Thank you to other reviewers on this product, Niagara Cycle, Amazon, and to Wald! Keep up the awesome work!

These are great! Very sturdy, incredibly easy to install (10 minutes tops, and I'm not mechanically inclined...). Come with adapters to fit several frame sizes (I had to use the smallest to fit a Huffy 20" girl's bike). Child learning to ride is 60 lbs. and has a lot of insecurity issues. These make her feel stable and safe. We'll be taking them off in no time! Worth the extra money. Highly recommended.

The construction appears to be strong and more than capable. However, in order to mount the unit the thickness of the metal requires that you have an at least 3/8 inches or more of extra threads on the rear axle on each side of the bike. (1/4 inch for the wheel support and 1/8 inch for the brace. If you need to use the spacing washing, add another 1/8 inch.) Because of this, it would not fit on my child's bike.

A number of reviewers have made the comment that these training wheels won't fit due to not enough threads on the axle; that's true but easy to fix with a replacement axle. Look these are very well built so the stack up is is relatively thick. The key is to make sure that with the training wheels installed you still are fully engaging all of the threads on the axle nut. If you're not it could be a liability.

I had the same problem with a craig's list girl's huffy 20" wheel BMX style bike. I bought a new axle off amazon for less than $10 delivered and the training wheels fit perfect. Again, don't put these wheels on if you aren't engaging all the threads of the axle nut. You could possibly end up with the training wheel falling off and an injured child.

This disclaimer is you have to take the rear hub apart to install a new axle; the reality of this is most people should be able to figure this out by watching a couple you tube videos and being very careful. If you aren't confident then absolutely don't do it. I wouldn't take it too a bike shop because the cost to have them do it probably won't make sense. It's a good opportunity to take the hub apart, regrease it and set the bearing preload.

My other comment about these training wheels is you should put a SMALL amount of bearing application grease on the training wheel axles prior to assy. I did this on mine and the training wheels turn very smoothly.

This type of product is almost non existant in today's market: overbuilt, well designed, made in america, looks cool and if you take care of them your great grand kids could be using them.

I'm pretty certain due to the thickness of the brackets, these training wheels will be able to hold 100 pounds as they claim. My only issue while trying attach it to my son's Huffy 20" Pro Thunder bicycle, I didnt have enough thread on the bolt to attach both the securing brace and the training wheel to the back of the frame. I just had room to attach the training wheels very tightly to the frame without the brace. I gave this review 4 stars because I just could asemble all the pieces to the bike otherwise a good pruchase.

UPDATE!!! 10-31-2012

It was a suggestion in one of the comments to try ordering axle extenders from [...] for $20, it was a success. The 24 pitch single coaster brake axle extender fitted perfectly and now I was able to place the washer, brace arm and training wheel on to the bicycle. Unfortunately I checked back to the website to post a review and the owner has closed the online store and has put his buisness up for bid. Glad I was able to order this product prior to the shutdown.

I bought two of these, one for a 20" bike and one for a 12" bike. They both fit fine, although there is no room to adjust the wheels to be farther from the ground on the 12" bike. The training wheels are very sturdy and installed easily.

I never thought finding solid affordable training wheels will be this hard. I returned few I bought from bricks and mortar stores; I returned Wald 742 Training Wheels (16-26-Inch) I bought from Amazon to get these, because they fit on a 20" Mangoose BMX with (with > inch tube frame) and hold my 8 years old 85 pounds without bending. She is happy with them and they seem sturdy and hold her weight.

We got these for my daughters 20" huffy bike we got from walmart, she's only 5 but the size of an 8 year old so she still need training wheels but the bike didn't come with any, we searched & searched & found these. My husband finally got them on after almost an hour & it was extremely difficult, he had to remove the plastic cover that was covering the chain completely. The construction of them however is really sturdy which is why I'm giving them 3 stars it just wasn't quite what we were looking for.
