Book Description

March 31, 2008
1980s cult film Repo Man gets an official sequel - in graphic novel form... with a script by original writer/director Alex Cox. Cox explains: "After REPO MAN, I became interested in the idea of a sequel. Specifically - what had happened to Otto, during his ten-year absence from earth? And what would he make of the changes which had taken place in his absence? Otto, it would appear, has been held prisoner, in great luxury, on the planet Mars. Now he has returned to earth, and changed his name -- to Waldo." Waldo, recently returned from Mars, is forced to choose where his allegiance lies -- his boss, Duke Mantee, or the sex goddess, Velma; money or knowledge; the past or the future; Earth...or Mars?

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Based on a script that never got filmed, Cox's long-overdue sequel to his cult classic film Repo Man is every bit as fractured and uneven as its predecessor, but it too has its own kind of loopy charm. Protagonist Otto (who now believes his name is Waldo) finds himself in a late-'90s American city that looks like a composite of a dozen stereotypical war zones, the last 13 years of his life gone from memory. His dreams hint at a recent stay on Mars, but he's too busy trying to eke out a living in a city that doesn't bathe to pay them much attention. Between jumping from one dead-end job to another, and jumping in and out of bed with inscrutable hottie Velma, readers get hints of overarching conspiracies and alien puppet masters. Hints, but not much more—by book's end just as many questions are left unanswered as answered. Still, it's a ride that should appeal to fans of the original, and Bones's overly colorful and densely chaotic visual style gleefully explores this mess of a world Cox has so lovingly built. The script's jabs at American consumerism, which have Waldo falling for every buy-now-pay-later sales pitch imaginable, resonate particularly well. (Apr.)

5.0 out of 5 stars Unexpected treat, September 7, 2008

I was/am a huge Repo Man fan and was thrilled to discover this book.
Not exactly what I expected, but I really enjoyed how Alex Cox re-considered these characters.
It looks great too, kind of important in a graphic novel.

4.0 out of 5 stars A bit off-center but fun, October 29, 2008
This review is from: Waldo's Hawaiian Holiday (Paperback)
Alex Cox lets his imagination run wild with this four-color sequel to the film Repo Man. The main character's name changes at the beginning of the book, and a few characters from the film make cameo appearances. Waldo deals as well as he can with life in the '90s, but he never makes it to Hawaii. It's a graphic novel, but the adult themes and occasional nudity make the book unsuitable for children.
