About the Author

Over the years as a Creative Director in advertising, SongLi (as he is known in Mandarin) has worked for major agencies in America, Japan, and China. From this experience he decided to follow his own passion for photography, driven by an active imagination. His unique visual focus is noted for its emphasis on the power and emotion of details even in the most simple subjects. SongLi received further recognition for his creative talent when he became the first foreigner to win multiple awards, including Best of Show, at the Dalian International Photographic competition. His images of Dalian continue to earn acclaim as traveling exhibits and in global photo contests. The commercial success of SongLi's pictures has also helped introduce the world to this uniquely historic Chinese city in Northeast China. His iconic photography has become the hallmark representation of Dalian city and its population. In addition, SongLi is acknowledged by the Dalian Municipal Government and the city's creative industry as a resident foreign expert. He has also publicly earned the title of "ZhongGuo Tong" (a foreigner who knows about China and lives like a local citizen, literally "China understands").

There is so much to see and do on this small planet, but it is impossible to go everywhere. This book makes it possible to explore Dalian, a city that I might otherwise never have had an opportunity to visit.
The author begins by stating that it is a book about feelings. I had the feeling that I had walked through this unique city, explored places and seen things that most people have not even imagined. Every page was a visual feast. I found myself lingering for some considerable time over the beautiful pictures and comfortable commentary.
Dalian is just across a large bay from North Korea, yet the splendid photography of Dalian and its citizens gives one an unexpected feeling of elation. There is real modern life going on there, coupled with the many hundreds of years of history.
It must not be easy to create such a work living in a place so foreign to most of us, but Song Li has done a creditable job of producing this book of feelings. A Walk Across Dalian

This could have been a beautiful book. The photos are terrific and the concept is quite interesting. However, the print quality is so poor as to be distracting. This is a publish-on-demand book (mine was produced the day after I ordered it) and unfortunately the author took a short-cut and used the wrong paper for good photo reproduction. I would have paid a bit more to have it done right.

Anything worth doing--and this book should have been--is worth doing well.
